Clan of the Cave Bear is about a little girl, a homo-sapien, who loses her clan to a catastrophe and is taken-in and raised by a Neanderthal tribe. This book is used in some Universities as a teaching aid in order to demonstrate what life was most likely like some 50,000 years ago. It is a fantastic read.

I've read all 5 of Jean Auel's Earth Children series. Clan of the Cave Bear was the first in the series and is by far my favourite. Each book thereafter was not equal to the one before. Her last book, The Shelters of Stones, was terrible. It was a long book which dealt with the protagonist, Ayla, and her 'man' travelling from one place to another. The whole book talks about how they travel, stop to have sex, eat, sleep and then do it all over again. It was torture to read and eventually I ended up skim reading to get through the book.

Jean is working on the 6th and final instalment and has been doing so for close to 8 years. There was a 12 year gap between her 4th and 5th book.

The first in the Earth's Children series. One of the most detailed authors I have ever read. If you have an interest about the Ice Age era, this is a good read.

Recent research indicate that the Neaderthals did have the ability to speak. Anyway, this is a great book! If you like the type of "cave man" sagas, then this is the "must read" one.
