Third in the No. 1 Ladies' Detective series.

Mma. Makutsi plays a more important part in this book. When Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni suddenly loses interest in his shop, Mma. Makutsi gets yet another promotion, to acting manager. She does a great job, managing to motivate the two lazy apprentices while also earning a large fee for the detective agency.

Meanwhile, Mma. Ramotswe tries to help Mr. J.L.B. Motekoni conquer his bout of depression. She reads everything she can find on the subject and also enlists the aid of the woman who runs the orphan farm.

Enjoyed this just as much as the first two. One reason I like the books better than the TV series is the descriptions of the random thoughts and fantasies the characters have.

Mma Mekutsi showed her stuff in this one! Go girl...
Mma Mekutsi (sp?) shows her stuff in this book! Go girl! And Mma Romatswe (sp) proves to be more than a detective. Telling "stories" to her clients and the people she interviews when working cases is her way of getting them to see the big picture (not just their little piece of the puzzle). And she's not a skeerd of those arrogant self-important clients; she breaks them down through soft words, respectfully demanding respect for her agency.
The special traits of the characters are well-defined in this book.

Not as good as the first two books, but still I wanted to follow it to see how the story plays out. I somehow felt less connected to the character this time, mostly because I somehow felt that the people didn't seem the same. Something about them just felt different.
