as hard to put down as a nonfiction work about the origins of Mormonism can possibly be. Krakauer masterfully narrates the surprisingly violent origins of the quintessential "American religion," demonstrating how that history played a part in the death of a young mother and her baby girl. Krakauer forces an honest eye not only on the origins of Mormonism, but of fundamentalist belief and religion in general.

One of my all-time favorites. Mostly because it opened my eyes to the region I lived in.

This is a chilling book about "faith" without morality. I am now convinced that Mormon Fundamentalists have more in common with AlQaeda than so-called mainstream Mormons have with the rest of mainstream Christianity in America. Jon Krakauer weaves a compelling tale with revealing the bloody historical underbelly of Mormonism.

A history, in many cases, kept from its own believers.

Sadly, too many religions make the same mistake of lying or hiding the less savory parts of their history, which always comes back to bite in the end.

This book was interesting and disturbing in equal measures. There was a lot I didn't know about the LDS church before reading this. The main worry is that due to the excessive secrecy involved with that church, that the events detailed in this book may just be the tip of the iceberg.

I was riveted from the first page. The history of this American made religion from it's inception, it's schism, to the face of the modern church today is fascinating as so many details of it's practices are generally kept hidden from the public eye.
