Much better than AHWOSG, because it's not about Dave. His signature style comes off as much less self-indulgent when he's not writing about himself. A terrifically good book.

Eggers has a phenomenal writing style, yet hasn't quite perfected the art of writing a novel. He is much more effective as a short-story writer, although his talents GREATLY overwhelm his faults. Loved it, but not as much as A Heartbreaking Work...

Not a complete success but a great read nonetheless. The sheer implausable adventure of the protaganists' scheme is, in many ways, inspirational. The inherent flaws of their madcap adventuring - and their singleminded willingness to carry on regardless of practicalities - creates an atmosphere of sweet, inconsequential, liberation. However the restrictive introspection of the central character, particularly in his monologues and imagined conversations, rather obstructs the rush of their wanderlust. It is no coincidence that these passages are the least successfully written aspects of the book. It is clear that this is Eggars' first novel; by 'A Heartbreaking Work...' his skills have become sophisticated enough to prevent introspection becoming a suffocating influence on the flow of the novel.

There were golden nuggets burried in this book, but most of the travel stories just bored me because they sounded like every trip I've ever taken with friends and weren't very descriptive. I did enjoy Will's thought process and the back story of the friendship between him, Hand and Jack; although, Hand seemed to be the only complete character. This definitely felt like a first novel, but there was enough there to keep me reading.
