Bizarre short of how people change toward you depending on your fortune (and appearance), and who can blame them if you awaken as a giant bug! I haven't read the original Kafka translation, but this is supposed to be close. Kuper illustrations match the story well - ugly people, sad ugly bug, stark black&white pathos. Supposed to be comic and it is in an unlaughable way. I'm sure this adaptation is more fun to read than the original.

Imagine waking up to find you have turned into a huge cockroach. What is your reaction? The reaction of your friends and family? Okay, that is the summary of this story. Kafka. What can you expect? I never read his work before bed. Still, his work should be read.

This story shows where the expression "Kafkaesque" originates. A human discovering that he has been transformed into an inspect is a fascinating study in human relations, alienation and estrangement (with the emphasis on STRANGE). People of a rigid literalist mindset would not enjoy this. However, it is one of those stories which will grow on you with prolonged exposure.
