Of all of Alice Walker's books I found this one to be more challenging to read and a little abstract

I did not like this book at all. I couldn't even bring myself to finish it- I gave up about 3/4 of the way through. I was really disappointed because I absolutely LOVED The Color Purple, but this book really bored me and annoyed me.

I am having a hard time with this one - I think the "reader" is making it worse (I'm listening to this in my car) - she's reading as if it were a long poem.

I could not get into this book. It seemed like a self-indulgent, spoiled, rich woman who didn't have enough reasons to actually be happy. Couldn't finish it, and that's saying a lot.

I couldn't really engage with this book as I had with her other novels. While Walker's other characters I felt I could get to know the main characters in this book seem distant and a little full of themselves. Not stuck up, but to self-concerned and indulgent for my taste. I, like many others have had my own personal spiritual journeys, but I was not interested in accompanying these characters on theirs. I did find some of the sub characters inviting and sympathetic though.
While Walker's talent for writing still shines through, she makes words sound like water flowing from a waterfall, and her skill is undeniable, there may be a more narrow audience for this book who can relate to the characters.

I loved this book. It is a good read during times of difficult crossroads in life. My mother gave it to me one Christmas, and it was one book I can say was a perfect gift.

This is a very enlightening novel especially for those at a transitional period in their lives. Each character makes a self discovery that either propels them forward or invites them to rekindle their path. I read this book while riding on a train form Chicago to Toledo Ohio. At the beginning of my journey I was upset about something that I can't remember now.

It's a good book that talks about a couple who parted for a journey of soul searching.Alice Walker shows her talent in narrating the plight of black women in modern and ancient world. Story composed of several personal experience gathered during Kate's journey, the people she met along the way...the inferiority of human kind that causes the misfortune of the current living and consequences..a very uplifting spiritual journey that kept me thinking could it be the fear or pain that has divided us from the our very selves or could it be that we have uprooted our selves from our ancestor and thus wandering from the integral us?

People get hung up over the cleansing process that the progtagonist is going through (yes, a lot of it is gross), but it's what she is learning about herself that is important. I enjoyed this book; it reminded me of my times with "Grandmother" and the growth and "aha moments" I had.

Nice story...a bit choppy, but it's a quick read so it didn't matter. Alice Walker is one cool woman...
