This was a little disappointing after the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series.

First in this series, I think; it will have you back at the bookstore or library, to pick up the rest of the series, guaranteed.

Takes me back more than 20 years to the Edinburgh I loved. I can visualise every location in both the Isabel Dalhousie series and the Scotland Street series. I can even think of people who bear an uncanny resemblance to some of the characters - very Edinburgh!

Amazing! Isabel is a marvel!! Gentley written with a steady vision of what is right and wrong about Society. Paints an evocative image of Edinburgh and its people.

I'm now reading the second book in this series by the same author as the No.1 Ladies... Totally different writing style in this although I see the similarities. Plots are thicker and more single focussed. Like the philosphy angle and how the character sees the world. I would recommend this book to you if you like a light mystery - by that I don't mean light writing, just that there's not a lot of blood and gore - so far!

a body falling to its death in a theatre in Edinburgh sounds like the recipe for a great mystery novel. however, this book was dreadful: the main character was not likable (uppity and judgmental) and the death turned out to be an accident! yes - an accident! hello, didn't mr. mccall smith get the memo? accidents don't happen in mystery novels, murders do - that's sort of why those of us who like them, read them. i have no idea why this man is so popular. avoid at all costs.

If I had started with this serie according to the publishing sequence I would have probably dropped it with this one but...the more you read it the better it becomes! Belive me, it is worth reading.

An excellent read, not so much for the story but for characters and for Edinburgh!

Slow, old-fashioned and prim - Isabel is supposed to be in her early forties but acts like she's in her 70s, rather too genteel for the 21 century... and although I like cultural references I switch off when it turns into a lecture... I wanted to enjoy the book, but it didn't really come together.
