Originally written as a daily series for a Scottish newspaper, McCall Smith juggles four or five main characters and their everyday lives, and manages to amuse and make you concerned with them at the same time. Brilliant.

Really enjoy this writer! he writes great characters, light weight but interesting and you quickly decide who you like and who you don't. Fun holiday reading!!

O wow, the characters are sooo funny. I also like the style of the book. Each chapter is very short and focuses on one character at a time. Originally this was published in the newspaper, with a chapter either published daily or weekly....I'm unsure about the full details.

I believe I've become addicted to Alexander McCall Smith's writing! Everything I read by him, I thoroughly enjoy. This book is very different than The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, the Isabel Dalhousie series.This book is about the motley crew who inhabit an apartment building on the edge of the Bohemian part of Edinburgh's New Town, 44 Scotland Street I have one more book to finish the series, I loved them all

I loved this book. I look forward to reading a McCall Smith every time I'm slogging through a classic. Easy to read, funny and refreshingly simple yet with wonderfully interesting characters.
