One of the worst books I have ever read. One more example of filthy, cruddy content meant to influence teenagers. And, it portrays Latino-Americans once again in unflattering stereotypes. I do not recommend it to anyone.

It's interesting, I'll give it that. Somewhat more accessible than other things I've read from the Hernandi. Good linework. Ultimately just barely too esoteric to really like, but it was certainly worthy of checking out from the library.

This book was so ridiculous. It was very visually appealing, but if I just wanted something that looked nice I would go to an art gallery. The story was very hard to follow and the speech was not at all believable. I definitely did not enjoy this story.

I did NOT get the last half of the book. How did they switch? I love Hernandez's style and Love and Rockets... this story seemed to be along similar tone... however, i did not like the last half. I needed more explanation.

Last, a graphic novel, published by Vertigo. Gilbert Hernandez’ Sloth is his first original graphic novel (previously he’s done short stories and his longer works have been serialized). It’s the story of Miguel Serra, who rather than do drugs or attempt suicide to deal with all the crap that goes with being a teenager, wills himself into a coma. He awakens a year later and attempts to reanimate his life. Halfway through the book, Hernandez does something very unusual, structure-wise. (I don’t want to spoil it). At the end, though, it pays off.

Sloth is just the latest in a series of excellent graphic novels Vertigo’s released in the past couple of years. Pekar’s The Quitter, Brian K. Vaughan and Nico Henrichon’s Pride of Baghdad, Rick Veitch’s Can’t Get No...all amazing stuff, and not at all what one would expect judging from Vertigo’s monthly comics.

Gilbert Hernandez takes the familiar small-town teenage angst story and moves into a strange and beguiling rumination on choice, fate and reality. He manages this while writing very real, vulnerable characters - supported by his expressive art style, capturing each character's thoughts and emotions.

If you like this, I suggest you pick up 'Love and Rockets'.
