Taken the idea from the concept of long-tail distribution in statistics, Anderson leads you through episode after episode in history that tells you how the long tail market has developed. <p>
Now with the ubiquitous Internet that connects not just computers but things, people and ideas with each other, we are truly entering a world where you can find what you're looking for, with some help from others like you. That's the beauty of the long tail marketplace where people help other people to get what they want or need a lot more easily then before.

A very good book. C.Anderson, editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine, explains the secretes of the age of abundance and niche content. Created from an article originally appeared on Wired the book is probably too extended.
Anyway is a must read to understand recent economical phenomenons.

An ok read, although the book essentially takes what is a simple concept (you can make a lot of money selling to niches) and expounds on it for pages and pages and pages that may be interesting to you, if not useful.

Very smart book. Following are a few of the points I enjoyed:

-TV/mass media always targets common interests, and that means sex, relationships, and stupid gameshows...this is not NOT! because people are dumb, but because in sex, relationships, and gameshows, mass-culture doesn't vary much...whereas with many other topics (vacationing, food choice, historical interest, beer-making etc) people vary much more than about sex...which is why those become niche market/channels. very smart.

-Search filters improves the utility of the long tale, as people can then find their own niche interests. brilliant point.

-critical mass for niche/long tale is very low --very interesting implications for future.

-People don't view stealing music/media as stealing anymore. especially true in GenY...this is scary, but as he pts out- must deal with this truth.
