Nice easy read. Its a good book if you like his type of stories which is usually based on God & heaven. Its a story about a man who tries to kill himself because he feels like a failure. In doing so, he gets to spend another day with his mother who died 8 years prior. While I was reading this book, I always felt like I should call my mother & tell her how much she means to me.

This was a pretty good book. Overall I'm not too big of a fan of Albom's, as his writing tends to be over-the-top figurative and have very obvious morals and values strewn throughout. It's not that I mind these things in a novel, but I prefer for the novels to be longer and the "messages" to be more subtle. Perhaps he just has a different sort of audience in mind, say, the general unread public, but I would prefer not to be spoonfed his (at times, corny) ideas. Although, this book was a quick, fun read, it had a surprise ending, and it was better than The Five People You Meet in Heaven.

This book is another proof about the truly powerful and boundless love of a mother that will have you blinking away tears that come freely upon the words that tug at your heart.

"Chick" got his chance for one more day with his mother and we know that it would never happen to any of us....or could it? It is best not to put off spending more precious time with those you love and care the most and always let them know how you feel about them. Our lives are too short to take every day for granted.

Mitch truly knows how to captivate his readers with heartwrenching words.

This is one of those books that once I started reading it, I wasn't able to put it off my mind until I completed the reading - the type that I would begin reading right before bedtime and ended staying up till morning until I finished it. Highly recommended.

The book speaks so much truth about our relationship with our parents - that they are too concerned about us, that a lot of times we feel suffocated by their concern - but once they've gone, you know that you would never get the same kind of "pure love" from anyone else in this world, and nobody would really care about you as much as they do.

The main character is Charley. Charley's mother said that children always think of themselves as a burden to their parents, but they often forget that they are their parents' "wishes granted". That's very true too. I feel it really hits me the most when Charley mentioned how often he had avoided his mother when she was alive, yet when she died, he missed her so much that he felt so lost and realized that he had only wanted to be with her.

Often as a teenager or an adult, I've felt the same way. I've done the same thing. But in the end, after I've lost my father, I often thought "if only I had one more day with him"... This book reminds me that I still have my mother and I should cherish the time I still have with her. It is asking all of us to cherish and value our parents while they are still with us.

Another kudos for Mitch Albom. You've become my favourite author now.

This was one of my first books I read in the early days of January 2010. I stumbled into this book when I was a book-fair. Upon picking the book up and read the flaps, I began reading it immediately and could not put it down. How good is this book? Well, I am in a book-fair and my basket was filled with books piled to an un-safe height, and yet I stopped to read this book. It is a great book! I could relate to the pains, the disappointments, the loss, the abandonments, and when you thought all is lost, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Yes... this book will have a special place in my heart. For content wise 4 out of 5. For impactness (this could be subjective of course) 5 out of 5 stars! I will be reading his other books and this weekend, I'll be reading, "tuesdays with Morrie". Look forward to share more.

For One More Day explores the unique relationship between a mother and son that transcend between life and death.

The story begins with a broken man who found himself totally cut-off by his own family after he becomes an alcoholic following his disability to accept his mother's death some 8 yrs ago.

The last straw came when he was not even invited to his own daughter's wedding and he decided to take his own life.

In his semi-conscious state, he saw his mama and spend a day with her. He tried to reconcile and get closer to her while recalling his childhood with an absentee father he tried so hard to please and who never truly regarded his as anything but a baseball player.

On the other hand, he has a mother who loved him unconditionally and he recalled the many times he did not stand up for her and his regrets.

The author said that this book was a ghost story as it was about Charley Benetto meeting his deceased mother after trying to kill himself in his hometown. In fact, the true ghosts deep down Charley's heart were anger and guilt due to his lies for excusing himself from his mother's birthday reunion and yielding to his father's expectation of becoming a professional baseball player. His frustration of his wrongdoing drove him to become an alcoholic and detach himself from his family as he did not want to face them, living a miserable life. For one more day living with his mother, the puzzles unsolved all through the years unveiled in front of him as jigsaws fitted into their places. The mother's love to her child is unconditional, forgiving and everlasting. As depicted at its epilogue, "to listen, to love, to apologize, to forgive" are the means to exorcize the ghosts within. The story was told in a movie-like manner with intermissions on incidents about "Times My Mother Stood Up for Me" and "Times I Did Not Stand Up for My Mother", showing that Charley was blaming himself for not loving his mother thoroughly and resting on the dilemma of becoming a daddy's boy or a mama's boy. The three visits accompanying his mother on that extra day unfolded the secrets behind his life and his family, yet forming the transition from an unbelievable situation to the reality that his mother had already died. This clever plot of the author brings much food for thought to the readers if such one more day does exist, what would we treasure and do for good?

What if we could just spend one more day with someone we loved and cared for that has left us. Would you ask the questions you dared to ask but always afraid to hear the answers! To be able to tell them how much you miss them and to say sorry for all the things you said and done and the things you never said! This is a powerful book that will have you gripped, a book for someone who has lost a person in their life. You will not be able to put this one down and you will cry!!! Very touching and filled with real emotion!!

What would you do with your last few hours with a loved one? What would you say? How would you spend the time? Albom tells the story of one man, Charley “Chick” Benetto, and his relationship with his mother. Eight years after his mother’s death, his job lost, and finding out his daughter had left him out of her wedding, Charley is drunk and suicidal.

He drives to his hometown “to end his life where it began.” With two attempts to kill himself and no success, Charley walks to the house he grew up in and finds his late mother standing there, perfectly fine. He spends the day with her, learns secrets that were left in the past and gives the apologies he always regretted never having the chance to give.

Fans of Albom’s Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven will find familiarity in the soul-searching that Chick explores. The uplifting message in this story will resonate with all types of people.

There are many in this world who would do anything to get just that one chance to make amends for their past misgivings. Yet very few get this golden opportunity while the majority is saddled with that nostalgic remorse and regret.

Mitch Albom’s new edition titled “For one more day” takes one through a wistful journey which encounters a strange and enigmatic tryst with the ghost of the past. The story unfolds the main character Charley Benetto (Chick) whose life is in ruins. Being unwanted at his own daughter’ wedding was the last straw of having lost everything and he is ready to give up his life. As he takes a midnight ride to his hometown, he encounters his dead mother much to his amazement and everything seemed as normal as ever.

Instances from his life are brought to light with a quick flashback through the book. Being with his mother for that one day makes him realize the lack of time he spent with her and how out of touch he had been with her. Yet she had managed to retain that special place in his heart and the close call was what brought her to him and his encounter with the other world. As this journey nears an end, his surprise knows no bounds as he unravels several loopholes and a shocking truth in the end. He also gets the second chance to convey his unexpressed explanation for a certain act of his, which to his surprise was known to her all long.

This book is intriguing and emphasizes beautifully on a mother-son relationship. It makes one reflective and also makes ones eyes go moist and choke with emotion. The few words quoted in the book as the character’s father tells him “mama’s boy or daddy’s boy chick? What’s it gonna be?” As he recalls this statement in the end, he is made to realize by his mother that “a child should never have to choose.”

Many may dispute this as being just another ghost story. Yet there are times that we draw parallels and examples from our lost loved ones that make it seem as though they were never gone. They retain their omnipresence in our memories. There are some individuals to whom we postpone our visits; taking them for granted only to realize that one fine day they are no longer there. And then we grieve at our actions for having said something that had hurt them or not having spent quality time with them when they were alive. This thought continues to haunt us till eternity.

This book teaches one to never take anything or anyone for granted. Life’s uncertainty is such that we may never get another chance. So why not take the one life hands out and utilize it to the maximum as the saying goes,” If life hands you a lemon, make lemonade.” One should ensure this ‘lemonade’ remains sweet instead of letting it turn sour.

This was a really quick read. It sends a message that we really need to take a time out from our busy schedules and place some value on the important things like family. The display of mother to child love is very touching and this book is a good reminder that those we love are never far from us.

I liked it and it made me cry, but at times I wonder if it is too formulaic and somewhat artificial in its attempt to jerk the tears from your face. A tribute to moms everywhere and a damning portrayal of men.

I wasn't very intrigued by this book. It is nothing except a story of a typical dysfunctional family. The main character blames his entire life on his father who left the family alone.

In your typical American setting of the past, it was important for Dad to be there to teach son how to play baseball, but Mom now has to do it.

Reading was easy to do, but I generally didn't like it as it was just way too simple.

The only thing I really liked very much was the intense love of his mother and ensuring that she gave her best to her children.

Juz wanna share some of its nice quotes:

"I saw her expression that old, unshakable mountain of concern. And I realized when you look at your mother, you are looking at the purest love you will ever know."

"...echo...when it's quite and other sounds are absorbed..."

"You need to keep people close. You need to give them access to your heart."

"...parents, if they love you, will hold you up safely, above their swirling waters, and sometimes that meant you'll never know what they endured, and you may treat them unkindly, in a way you otherwise wouldn't..."

"...behind all your stories is always your mother's story, because hers is where yours begins."

This book really brings back the nostalgic times between the time you had with your late Mother. Although I couldn't relate totally to the main characters relationship with his mother, I could relate some what. I think there are those universal traits that exists amongst Mothers, no matter what culture, race or background you are from. That undeniable Mother's love. It definitely is a must read for anyone who has lost their Mother and wish that they had one more day to spend with her, to relive the good times, to fix the bad times and to be cared for like you will never be cared for again. I miss you Mom....

This turned out to be a pretty good book, although I believe it could have been better. I don't deny that Albom is talented (though I haven't read any of his previous works), but I think he lost focus during certain portions of the story.

The general premise was excellent ... the first sentence instantly drew me in ... but I felt the characters weren't fully developed. Also, there were times, particularly in the middle of the book, where I was downright bored. I felt that the visits to the elderly friends of his mother were dragged out needlessly, and that Albom should have added more variety (all of the individuals he introduced the reader to, seemed like cardboard cutouts). I understand that he was going for simplicity, but spicing things up a little would have made a world of a difference.

I really appreciate the message of the book, and am annoyed by reviewers who suggest that Albom's life was not difficult, and that he shouldn't have been depressed. Those individuals obviously have no understanding of depression or addictions. I applaud Albom for his insight into human life and mental illness.

Mitch Albom is an author who has a lot to live up to. After such great hits as TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE and THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVNE, I opened my copy of FOR ONE MORE DAY wondering if he'd be able to pull off another winner. The answer, wholeheartedly, is yes.

Albom pays tribute to mothers with the story of Charley "Chick" Benetto, who remembers clearly the words his father told him as a young boy: "You can be a mama's boy or a daddy's boy. But you can't be both."

For most of his life, Chick worked towards being a daddy's boy. Even when his father's love was elusive, it was the one thing he always strove to earn. It wasn't until later that Chick learned, as everyone does, that love not given freely can never be earned, no matter how hard we try.

When Chick's downward spiral leads to an attempted suicide, he's granted the one thing he's always wished for since his mother's death eight years previously--the chance to spend one more day with a mother who always loved him unconditionally, even when he didn't deserve it.

FOR ONE MORE DAY is the story of Chick, but even more so the story of his mother, Posey, a women who sacrificed more, and withstood more heartache, than her children ever knew. And as Chick realizes that he'd made the wrong decision, all those years ago, in becoming a daddy's boy, he's also given the chance to forgive himself, and, ultimately, become a better person.

This is an emotional and heartfelt read, every bit as good as Mr. Albom's previous releases. In recent articles I've read negative comments about the author being "too sentimental" in his writings; all I can say to that is that when sentimentality starts being a crime, we're all in trouble.

A touching tale about a person who has given up on life, so much so that he tries to kill himself not once but twice. This tale about a guy who regrets not being at his mum's side when she breathed her last tells a story of how we often just neglect the care that our parents shower on us. The times we took that love for granted, only to yearn for more when they are not there anymore. Highly recommended for people who think that they have it all in life and for those who think that life is not worth living anymore and of course, those who just want a good read.

The book starts with a typical concept--dysfunctional family, with the main character regretting how his life turned out because of it. However, Albom puts a spin into the usual theme by observing the situation in different angles, exposing the thoughts of different characters, and using a somewhat not chronological storyline (with multiple flashbacks). Arguably, it may not have enough twists and turns in the plot to be engaging for all readers (and personally some of Albom's other works are better), the book explores an idea which most seem to take for granted (loves that we overlook), and makes the reader ask, "If I had just one day, who would I spend it with?"

Plot: 4; Style: 4 (a bit simple, so not too engaging, but suits well for this book); Characterization/Development: 4.5 (more for development); Enjoyment: 4.5

Albom's stories are always provoking. This is a story of a man in his 50's who has carried traumatic childhood experiences and expectations into his adulthood. After years of alcoholism and self doubt, he gets a chance to spend "one more day" with his now deceased Mother. *Insert Twilight Zone music* The character development in this story is what makes it such a page turner. I cried and laughed. Mitch Albom writes layered and absorbing story lines. If you enjoy his stories you will LOVE this one.
