I decided to check this one out because I was impressed by the Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons. Brown pretty much used the same formula in this book that he did with the others: intrigue, suspense, having us suspect all the characters, you know... basically a thriller. But I found it a bit lacking. My eyes would glaze over sometimes in reading these wordy, and imo, boring descriptions of glacial formations or chondrules and the like. Regardless, I was pulled in and I found myself rooting for the character of Rachel Sexton because I found her to be a more likeable character than Robert Langdon. I gotta hand it to Brown though for going so far as to having us suspect the President of the United States was part of this conspiracy. If you're into Dan Brown books, I think it's worth checking out because it did hit me with a few "oh shit!" or "oh my god!" moments.

Taken in isolation - entertaining. However, reading it after "DaVinci Code" & "Angels & Demons" reveals Mr/ Brown to have a limited capacity to generate novel plots. This book simply follow the exact plot of the other two - an inept, bumbling male "hero" who is supremely intellectual and an utter failure with women linking up with a savvy, dynamic, genius & beautiful female who invests all of her efforts trying to keep Mr. Clumsy from folding the whole poker hand.

"Deception Point" is a 2001 techno-thriller novel by Dan Brown. The plot concerns a meteorite found within the Arctic Circle that may provide proof of extraterrestrial life, and attempts by dark forces to prevent this finding from becoming public. If you enjoy stories about conspiracies that are as big as they come, this story is definitely for you.

Dan Brown knows how to write a page turner. So much so that he's got to have a template; all his books follow the same predictable pattern. The plot points are so badly telegraphed in this book, a kindergartener who just figured out that spot was going to run could predict the ending of this novel. The DaVinci Code was fun, but without a little religious intrigue, Brown obviously has no insight into the human condition. His dialogue is particularly painful. Perhaps he should just stick to doing research into difficult subjects, he is relatively adept at that. But has a writer, this man is nothing but a hack.

In recent times if any author has impressed me after Paulo Coelho it certainly is Dan Brown.

I picked up Da Vinci Code because everybody was talking about it. One just had to read it to be part of the conversation with friends... you know one of those things.

Not that I didn’t like the book or anything. It is a great read.

And then at the signal one day (yes I do buy cheaper versions of books sometimes!!!) the guy flashed Deception Point and the fact that he had the information that it was from the same author of Da Vinci Code.. kinda impressed me and I casually picked up the book.

It took me a while to actually get down to reading the book because I was finishing Paulo Coelho’s Veronica Decides to Die ... and everyone at my work place would pick up Deception Point and not seem to return it.

That is right.. right from the first page .. the story is addictive. You just have to get to the next page and the next one after that .. which is an amazing quality with Dan Brown.

The 557 pages just bring one interesting twist after the other and also that he has two parallel stories running keeps you kinda on the reading edge.

The story is primarily about this woman whose father is contesting for being the next President of the United States. The existing President is however trying to save his chair and is pretty kicked about a new discovery that NASA has recently made.

I am one of those people who never believed in the man on the moon phenomenon, so reading about this NASA discovery was that much more interesting.

The things people will do for power is beyond the imagination of many.

This is another of Dan Brown's books that repackages stuff you've already read in his other novels. And while Deception Point tries to look well researched, at times it's just pure fantasy and the good guys get very, very lucky!

President Zachary Herney is facing a very tough re-election. His opponent, Senator Sedgwick Sexton has picked NASA's overspending as a campaign issue. So when the president hears NASA has found an unusual asteroid in the Arctic, he chooses Sexton's sceptical daughter as one of the team that will verify the claim.

It's very convenient that Rachel Sexton is an analyst at the National Reconnaissance Office and doesn't like her father much. But then you'd better get used to handy coincidences if you're going to read this book. Not as good as Angels and Demons or the DaVinci Code.

The Deception Point is a stead fast thriller which is also a science fiction! We also have interesting mystery and suspense to go through about politics at the US between the Senator and the president..where the presidents power is gradually declining and the senator is gaining ground over the nation! and this part of the story is intermingled with NASA having an exciting scientific discovery which is unbelievable at the start! And the president calls upon the senator's daughter who is working for him and not in good terms with the senator to go through the NASA investigation about the discovery which remains a suspense for about half of the book...and it potrays the adventures of Alex Sexton(daughter of senator) having life threatening adventures and a commendable end for the story! The book is like a thrilling roller-coaster ride with lot of unexpected twists and turns with a delightful end!

Deception Point is another masterpiece from Dan Brown.
Set in Washington, DC and Antartica, Deception Point uses mankinds obsession with finding life beyond Earth as the basis of its plot.
With a Presidential election at stake, NASA -- fearing the Democratic parties candidate may soon be moving into the White House matters into its own hands in the hopes of keeping the incumbent in office in order to protect itself from being put on the chopping block.
I hadn't thought Brown could top The Da Vinci Code or Angels and Demons ...boy was I wrong. Deception Point is a fast paced thriller bound to keep you reading from start to finish.

A conspiracy of mammoth proportion (literally), a revered organization involved in murky operations, a set of individuals risking their lives to bring to the world a truth which it is probably better off not knowing, all this and everything you expect from a Dan Brown book is packed in this irresistible thriller. After Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons, this is my 3rd read of him and he has never failed to disappoint me. Hats off to the research and coverage he provides on the topic in hand, no doubt in which the experts will manage to find meteoric loopholes, but for an unassuming reader, it simply leaves him spell bound. Its 4 out of 5 stars for this book and cheers to the best thriller writer of my age for bringing us another gem.

LOVED this book! Dan Brown is an intelligent, creative & realistic writer. Very knowledgeable in his subjects & raises the bar for future reads. Pulled me into the story from very beginning & I literally couldn't put it down! So many surprising twists, paradoxes & interwoven complex characters. A thriller book: Tragedy, intellect & wit. (I actually laughed out loud a few times.) It will keep you on the edge of your seat til the very last page!

This is one of Dan Browns better novels. Unlike "Angels and Demons" or "The Da Vinci Code" you don't find out who is behind everything by the second chapter. There is a lot of Science garbal that you have to get though at the beginning of the book. However, Brown does make everything seem plausible. At times I found myself skimming through pages waiting for Brown to get to the point that easy to see coming. I think the book could have done with one more edit. Nonetheless I still enjoyed the book.

How wish I could rate it lower than 1 star.
Never have I read a book that actually gets duller when the plot "thickens". Any little pocket of suspense that the author builds is destroyed by the uninspiring resolution or unnecessary scientific explanation.
Brown, as usually tries to stun & shock the reader with "the truth" but he writes like a 12 year old (no offence to 12 year olds). Every character is either the pinnacle of beauty or some grotesque monster. I also find his product placement (e.g. "She took out her Nikon camera and Apple MacBook while enjoying a Pepsi) very distracting.
Please don't even pick this book up.

 Deception Point by Dan Brown

Once again Dan Brown brings the very best to mystery and intrigue. This time his target is NASA and a political race for the White House’s top spot – President of the United States.

In the frozen arctic of Canada NASA scientists have found something… something that will change the course of the humankind. Transporting the top minds in both the scientific and civilian fields to authenticate the find NASA hopes to redeem itself in the eyes of the general public after a series of costly and fruitless endeavors. Varification of the find will also secure victory for the White House as it’s president is up for re-election.

Intelligence Analyst, Rachel Sexton, is one of the experts brought in to verify the authenticity of the item and discovers evidence of a scientific fraud so profound that it could threaten controversy on a global scale. Before she can relay the information to the President and proper agencies there is murder and she escapes a group of assassins by undertaking a desperate trek across the dangerous arctic desert.

Along with an oceanographic scholar, Michael Tolland, they fight to stay alive and find a chance to expose the deception before the President can publicly state the find. In the end they discover that the truth is the most shocking deception of all.

This is an amazingly fast-paced read full of both the accurate facts concerning NASA and intricacies of US politics and pure brilliance of storytelling. If you want a great “Who Dunnit and Why?” then this is the book for you. Rooted so far in reality and the hope of reality it is difficult to tell where the facts end and the novelization begins. Completely enjoyable.

Penzler Pick, December 2001: In the world of page-turning thrillers, Dan Brown holds a special place in the hearts of many of us. After his first book, Digital Fortress, almost passed me by, he wrote Angels and Demons, which was probably one of the half-dozen most exciting thrillers of last year. It is a pleasure to report that his new book lives up to his reputation as a writer whose research and talent make his stories exciting, believable, and just plain unputdownable.

The time is now and President Zachary Herney is facing a very tough reelection. His opponent, Senator Sedgwick Sexton, is a powerful man with powerful friends and a mission: to reduce NASA's spending and move space exploration into the private sector. He has numerous supporters, including many beyond the businesses who will profit from this because of the embarrassment of 1996, when the Clinton administration was informed by NASA that proof existed of life on other planets. That information turned out to be premature, if not incorrect. (This story is true; I repeat, Dan Brown's research is very, very good.) The embattled president is assured that a rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice will prove to have far-reaching implications on America's space program. The find, however, needs to be verified.

Enter Rachel Sexton, a gister for the National Reconnaissance Office. Gisters reduce complex reports into single-page briefs, and in this case the president needs that confirmation before he broadcasts to the nation, probably ensuring his reelection. It's tricky because Rachel is the daughter of his opponent. Rachel is thrilled to be on the team traveling to the Arctic circle. She is a realist about her father's politics and has little respect for his stand on NASA, but Senator Sexton cannot help but have a problem with her involvement.

Adventure, romance, murder, skullduggery, and nail-biting tension ensue. By the end of Deception Point, the reader will be much better informed about how our space program works and how our politicians react to new information. Bring on the next Dan Brown thriller! --Otto Penzler --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly
Struggling to rebound from a series of embarrassing blunders that have jeopardized its political life at the start of this lively thriller, NASA makes an astounding discovery: there is a meteor embedded deep within the arctic ice. And it isn't just any meteor. Inside the huge rock, which crashed to earth in 1716, are fossils of giant insects proof of extraterrestrial life. Yet, given NASA's slipping reputation, the question arises: Is the meteor real or a fake? That uncertainty dogs NASA and its supporters in Brown's latest page-flipper, a finely polished amalgam of action and intrigue. Trying to determine the truth are intelligence agent Rachel Sexton and popular oceanographer Michael Tolland, both among the first to suspect something is amiss when the meteor is pulled from the ice. Their doubts quickly make them the targets of a mysterious death squad controlled by someone or something that doesn't want the public to hear the meteor may be a fraud. Together, Sexton and Tolland scramble across arctic glaciers, take refuge on ice floes, are rescued by a nuclear submarine, then find themselves trapped aboard a small research vessel off the coast of New Jersey. All the while, the nation's capital is buzzing as to whether NASA has engaged in deception. Or is NASA just a dupe for aerospace companies that have long wanted a bigger share of space contracts? Brown (Angels & Demons) moves into new territory with his latest. It's an excellent thriller a big yet believable story unfolding at breakneck pace, with convincing settings and just the right blend of likable and hateful characters. He's also done his research, folding in sophisticated scientific and military details that make his plot far more fulfilling than the norm.

Unlike a large number of people who've been introduced to Dan brown through his remarkable book the Da Vinci Code, my first Dan Brown book was Angels & Demons. Dan Brown has proven to be one of the best writers in the suspense & theological thriller genre. The novelty of his plots, his amazingly precise research, and his capacity to catch the reader's interest from the get-go and hold it until the last word in the last sentence of the last page, make him an exceptional author. Moreover, after completing each of Dan Brown's books, the reader usually comes away from the experience having learned much more than a storyline. I loved "Deception Point" - couldn't put it down. I also highly recommend "The Da Vinci Code" and "Angels and Demons."

The Plot:When a new NASA satellite spots evidence of an astonishingly rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice, the floundering space agency proclaims a much-needed victory… a victory that has profound implications for U.S. space policy and the impending presidential election. With the Oval Office in the balance, the President dispatches White House Intelligence analyst Rachel Sexton to the Milne Ice Shelf to verify the authenticity of the find. Accompanied by a team of experts, including the charismatic academic Michael Tolland, Rachel uncovers the unthinkable—evidence of scientific trickery—a bold deception that threatens to plunge the world into controversy. But before Rachel can contact the President, she and Michael are attacked by a deadly task force…a private team of assassins controlled by a mysterious powerbroker who will stop at nothing to hide the truth. Fleeing for their lives in an environment as desolate as it is lethal, they possess only one hope for survival: to find out who is behind this masterful ploy. The truth, they will learn, is the most shocking deception of all… In his most thrilling novel to date, bestselling author Dan Brown transports readers from the ultra-secret National Reconnaissance Office to the towering ice shelves of the Arctic Circle, and back again to the hallways of power inside the West Wing. Heralded for masterfully intermingling science, history, and politics in his critically acclaimed thriller Angels

Well, After reading Dan Brown's Angels and Demons, my expectations with this one were pretty high, if not expecting something better than Angels and Demons. Most people think A&D is better and I agree. But don't get the wrong it. Deception Point is purely brilliant, too.
.
The characters are pretty well developed, enough for a fast-paced novels like this through the flashbacks like every Dan Brown novel. The protagonist was of course lovable. Coming to the story, this one had two sides - A political side and the scientific side. Both are equally intriguing though the scientific side has lots of factual twists and coherently-built thrills. The political side is fascinating - highly fascinating, to be precise.

The chase takes your breath away as the deception becomes clear and clearer with every passing page. Then the best thing happens - both the sides of the story coincide and clash with each other to create a huge impact, one that Angels and demons couldn't make. It would have easily been my favorite Dan Brown novel but for the unwanted climax. It was unexpected, I give it to you but other than that it felt far-fetched. The ending also brought about a sense of uneasiness with the not-so-credible situation. The details are purely genius which only Dan Brown could go into.
.
Overall, an exhilarating and knowledgeable ride into the world of pure fiction. GO GRAB IT!

Deception Point centres around a NASA discovery of a meteorite, buried deep in the ice, inside the Arctic Circle. The discovery seems to indicate, life may exist outside our planet.

I thought this book was an exciting read, for the most part. The story starts off slowly as the scene is set,and we are introduced to the main characters, but after about the 150 pages the action really starts, both in Wasington and the frozen north. Why only 3 stars? Well, two things, really. Firstly, I felt the character development was not great, and secondly, the 'good guys' seemed to have an awful lot of luck on their side, when in tricky situations.

Dan Brown writes another thriller in the same style as the DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons. I actually liked this one better, because although a little far fetched, not as far fetched as the others. He leads you down the garden path, leaving you to believe you got it figured, only not so much. NASA finds a meteorite with fossils, giving proof of life beyond Earth. Independent civilian scientists are sent to authenticate the find, and perhaps find a little too much. A great read.

Deception Point is a thrilling novel, written by the bestselling author Dan Brown, whose intelligence skillfully weds earth sciences and high-tech weapons systems to a complex story of political ambition and intrigue. The story is based on a scientific discovery who attends to be an astonishing deception. The main character - White House Intelligence analyst Rachel Sexton sent by the President uncovers the unthinkable truth - the most shocking deception of all.

Deception Point is a rocket – fast thriller, providing many ifs during the reading. Predominantly, it is a scientific mystery which combines with political influence and holds the readers’ attention with the fact that this story might have really happen before, because of its realistic description and imaginable images. It is also very controversial.

Dan Brown is very good at creating secret characters, characters that at first we think they are good but at the end they become the villains. As a reference to the main character, Rachel Sexton is a very strong person, feminine with a masculine soul; she is brave, intelligent and tricky, just as any main character in Dan Brown’s novels. Every character has its own characteristics created in a very unique way, making the reader to believe that these personalities are not fictive.

I enjoyed this thriller because Dan Brown's great writing skills can use literally 5 different situations and connect them into one bigger story like a tile mosaic with each piece completing its purpose. I strongly recommend it!

Of all 4 books Dan Brown has written Deception Point is my least favorite. I didn't like it for several reasons: too much politics which made it boring (and I most of the time wanted to flip pages to find something more interesting), the book itself is too long, there were some parts which could be said in not so many words and the characters are not as charismatic as those in his earlier books. Also the plot is not very interesting especially since the title reveals a lot. And the last reason - personally I like books with more action (and his other books had more of it) and in Deception Point there's not enough action for my personal taste.

Rachel Sexton, estranged daughter of the charismatic leading Presidential nominee Senator Sedgewick Sexton, and herself a highly competent "gister" working for the little known but highly effective intelligence agency NRO (National Reconnaissance Office), one day gets an unexpected audience with the President himself. On his request, she soon herself in the icy depths of the Arctic, sent to verify a stupendous discovery by NASA.Curled Up With a Good BookComing at a time when NASA’s existence is threatened by Sedgewick’s rhetoric condemning its very expensive failures, Rachel finds the discovery too coincidental. But outside experts like Michael Tolland, a world-famous oceanographer, convince Rachel of its authenticity. Just hours before the President announces this information, Rachel and Michael discover a deadly deception. Before they can go public with the vital information, a highly skilled team of Special Forces are sent to destroy them. Battling nature’s deadly elements as well as unstoppable killers armed with incredibly high-tech arsenal, the duo struggle to survive and discern the truth. With author Dan Brown at the helm, readers are virtually guaranteed a book which is not only thrilling, intense and riveting but also thought-provoking; this book is no exception. Brown’s painstaking research is readily apparent in the copious authentic facts on which the premise of this entire story rests, adding a chilling touch of realism to the tale. Visual descriptions and a mild romance round off this adventurous story. Integrating behind-the-scenes look at insidious Washington political power-brokering with cutting edge high-tech research as well as abstruse scientific facts, Deception Point is a perfectly paced, inventive and gripping whodunit.

Probably the weakest of the Dan Brown books i have read so far (Davinci Code, Digital Fortress and Angels and demons). If you like conspiracy theories and or American politics and or Nasa then this is probably the perfect book for you. One annoying thing about Dan Brown novels is his choice of ridiculous character names. Corky Marlinson and Norah Mangor sound more like medical conditions than real people. This book is basically a story which centres around a World changing discovery of a fossilised meteorite on the Milne Ice shelf in the Artic Ocean by Nasa. Civillian scientists are sent to authenticate the discovery which when broadcast to the worlds media dramatically boosts the presidents election campaign and puts a hole in his opponents who has based his campaign on the failings of NASA and the presidents continual funding for doomed projects. However, things are not what they seem as the deception is uncovered. The question is who's behind the scam?
