The tale of young Oliver Twist is brilliantly written by Mr Dickens, the description of his larger than life characters jumps off the page and into the room, you hear, see and smell them, a fab book, very dark in parts, quite shocking really, a good read on a cold autumn evening.

Charles Dickens wrote memorable characters from every class of English society, but it was his lower class characters we remember best -- Fagin and the Artful Dodger, Mr. Bumble the parish beadle, Bill Sikes and Nancy, and the orphan Oliver himself. Written in 1838, OLIVER TWIST addressed a real problem in London and other European urban areas -- the mistreatment of children, often orphans, called "The Great London Waif Crisis." There are few scenes in English literature more memorable than the terrible instant Oliver draws the short straw and is forced to confront the officious Mr. Bumble and whimper, "Please, sir, I want some more" of the hideous gruel they served at the workhouse. The Dickens novel was wildly successful in America, and the story has been made into a number of movies and Broadway musicals. The musical version Oliver! starring Ron Moody as Fagin and Jack Wild as the Artful Dodger was the surprise winner of best picture at the 1968 Academy Awards and my personal favorite.

I love the style of Mr. Dickens for its satirical flavour.

Even having had to read it in high school, this was a great book. I need to read it again- this time without the deadlines and analysis involved last time.
