the story of the beautiful and reckless scarlett o'hara, who tumbles from one relationship to another unsuccessfully, her world comes tumbling down with the advent of the civil war. forced to adapt, she adapts in ways that the strict elders do not approve. unheeding she marries a swashbuckling rhett butler. she fails to understand his love for her, mooning after her teenage fancies, ashley wilkes. finally when she realises tthat she loves rhett , it is too late. their marriage is broken.

The book is VERY long, but it moves along nicely. There were some changes from the book to the movie version, but it is a classic...

strange hw smtyms it takes a lyftym to realise dat ya luv sm1.....bt itz too late wen d odr 1 tires out ov tryin n leves.....dis swap ov feelings z coincidental....n z d end....leaes an ache in ya heart.... dis gal z so headstrong n childish n burdened wid responsibilities at sch a young age dat...she cudnt get d tym to cm out ov her infatuation n realise her tru luv....so smtyms evn a lyftym z nt enough.....

Dis is an fabulous book...Margaret Mitchell took ten years to write dis book...n no wonder its branded the greatest love story of all times...d book holds a charm...something out of the ancient times...i luv Rhett Butler in dis...his words r so adorable...nd my next best character is Melanie...touching nd beautiful...

I didn't feel it lived up to the hype. It was an excellent historical fiction. But a crappy love story. Rhett deserves someone less blind than Scarlett. I liked Gone with the Wind. It was a good story, I really enjoyed the history which I had never read on extensively. It didn't live up to the hype though I must say. Perhaps it's because I have never seen the movie, and thus had the impression I was getting involved in a grand love story. I was pissed off that Scarlett didn't figure out until Melly was dieing, that she didn't love Ashley and she really loved Rhett. I felt it was both their faults for not really speaking their minds.

I think this is the only book that I've read more then once and certainly the only one I've now read 3 times. It was quite entertaining, still held most of the original charm I experienced as a teen and young adult with the first 2 readings. This time, as a mom, I was a bit more mortified at her utter lack of motherly love. And I think I had more sympathy for Rhett this time around.

The best book I have ever read!I was completely addicted to Scarlett and her amazing story with is set against a historical backdrop that I knew little about. It took a few attempts to get into but I'm so glad I persevered with it. If you've only seen the film, you're missing out on so much, everyone should read this.

its amazing to read how wonderfully margaret describes Scarlett s vanity,hypocrisy,pride....before i read this book...i had a belief that heroines in ove stories are no less than virgin mary....but she s different...u can identify with her As for Rhett....i d give my right hand fr a man like him in my life...

well i like the spirit of scarlett in the novel..she wud do anything 2 achieve her goals..i wud'nt call her character as morally wrong.just a little 2 determined 2 achieve her goal..n thn rhett butler.i think they suited each othr pretty well.n ashley looked pathetic..the story does'nt end in the novel.i think the auther want us 2 tell tht scarlett wud win back rhett..pretty njoyable.n those descriptions of wars..it was very tragic...

Amazing novel of the Civil War. Perhaps too optomistic, but the characters are amazing. Don't watch the movie--read the book, for the movie leaves out Will, a delicious character. Scarlett O'Hara complains about all the talk of war, then finds her life turned upside down by it. Only her manipulative power of men helps her and her family plantation of Tara stay afloat. She goes through men like dresses: Charles Hamilton, Frank Kennedy, and Rhett Butler all. Her love for the married Ashley Wilkes is sad and at times hard to understand. In the end, she learns lessons about love, life, family, and true wealth.

This is my favorite book, It is very well written, Scarlet goes through so many changes in her life as she tries to focus on on. She find out what true love is.

Named my son after one of the characters, Ashley, but never did get a girl to name the other likable girl character. Truly memorable. Besides I saw the movie several times plus also read the book SCARLET which another author wrote which is her life after this book. Highly recommend.

This is one of my absolute favourite books! I read it at least once every year, and always find new and exciting parts of it. It is a brilliantly written love story that addresses family, war, loss, character and much more. A definite must read!

I first read this book as a teen and twenty years later, it's still fantastic! The character development in just amazing. I had to read every word. Of course it's amazing that the strong racism was acceptable to write about 70 years after emancipation.

Great Story of Family, Greed, Lose and Love.Tells the story of coming of age during the Civil War. Of thinking that what you think is something or someone you love is really something else.

This is the most incredible story of all time, period...not the greatest love story or the greatest civil war story. I mean, what incredibly well-constructed characters and sub-characters! It is, hands down, the most fantastic book I have ever read! Long live the popularity of "Gone With the Wind", for it is a story so worthwhile that it should never be banned or out of print!
