Mediocre. A bit long in the middle. Main character was a bit TOO self-aware--became an inappropriate narrator (not bad content, just too insightful for her age).

Just finished reading this, what a wonderful read, I love childrens stories! And Margaret Mahy is a fantastic write. Life's a bit like the cabinet really...a box of wonders. People climb in and disappear. Sometimes they go forever. Sometimes they flit in and out of your life like wild birds..

It was actually pretty good. The writing style was a little different than I'am use to, but I really liked how it was written. You have many interesting characters and the plot twists keep you wanting to see what's going to happen next. I throught, though it's fantasy, part of it was very realistic and believeable.
