Unlike Pullman, this is definitely a children's book. Susan Cooper is a fab writer but I feel she just ran out of ideas here. I found the same thing being repeated as the books progressed. Over Sea, Under Sea stands out as a great children's read. The Greenwitch stands out as a good read for adults and children alike. The oppressive menace of the Welsh landscape is outstanding - a menace that is not quite matched in any of the other books. I fear the dark it is not scary enough for either adults or children. Quite a lot is borrowed from Tolkein, but he is the master and Cooper cannot be blamed for that!

An excellent story with non-stop action. I had to dock a star, however, because some of the story seemed inconsistent to me. On the one had, you have young Will Stanton, a reincarnated Old One, known in those circles as "The Seeker" because he is supposed to find and unite 6 medallions that will stop the Dark from rising, which seems imminent in the story. On the other hand, you have a kid who never really seems to seek anything; he's more of a finder than a seeker. On one hand, you have the story establishing that Will either instinctively knows, or has remembered much of the Old Ones' way of life, and "reads" a book to fill in all the blanks that reincarnation may have lost. On the other hand, you have a kid who doesn't seem to know anything and is heavily reliant on a fellow Old One to lead him down his fated path. Those little things kind of bugged me. But still, as I said, an entertaining read. I'm looking forward to the other books in the series.

I bought these books for my children, and promptly read each one all the way through. Of the series, The Dark is Rising (the third book in the series, I think) is my favorite. Young Will is an "Old One" and he comes of age on his eleventh birthday, at which time he is tempted by evil and learns to overcome it. (With the help of a Merlin-like character). He also learns to walk through time - a trick I would love to master.
