It has the most incredible translation into norwegian. By Halldis Moren Vesaas. Maybe it's the reason I like it so much. But it's extremley thight dramatically, and it doesn't matter that it's written hundreds of years ago: It still gets to me.

Less often studied than 'Britannicus' or 'Andromaque' perhaps, but Racine at his best, nonetheless. A great depiction of a Greek tragedy by a French concept of the divine.

jul 09. ted hughes does an incredible job of revitalizing this play! the language in english matches the propulsion of the plot. its rare that a translation beats a classic in the original, but racine does not hold up well in the french as well as english greats e.g. Shakespeare, Marlowe, Jonson, at least to this reader. as the introducer said in the preface to this national theater production: hughes language could never be mistaken for prose, even with its lack or rhyming and predictable meter. saw this in the first NT Live production.

Probably the only French play I can enjoy. All about fate, unrequited love, death, etc, set in Greek mythology.

I read this book in this edition for my university French studies. Jean Racine's French is elegant rhyme and absolutely gorgeous. Since this text is a requirement for some classes in University level French, I strongly recommend the Petit Classiques version. Why? Well this edition is published in France, for one, and is chock full of valuable commentaries, and also contains reading questions to aid your understanding, if I remember correctly.
