didn't like itit was okliked itloved itit was amazing
i have had time, and i do like it more. it is like a mystery, a romance and a social commentary all in one. Helen provides us with as much christian piousness as Jane Eyre, but she is more likeable, and her choices i respect more. The fantastic characters all have real growth and motivations and all act exactly as you would expect from their aptly drawn personalitites.
Fergus is hillarious, his brother unwittingly charming and Helen's ex, Arthur so deliciously cruel i cant help but gasp with delight at his every degredation. The first half of the novel teases you then the diary lets loose the secret's of the tenant's past and you become enthralled well and truly in the tale.
Not only that, it is a blasting comentary on what we admire as 'masculine' or 'acceptable' behaviour, the impossible standards and double standards we accept for our youth and adults and the sheer tragedy of any of those attempting to thwart them.
i loved it
the underrated of the bronte sisters, she has verve spunk and most importantly talent that was not recognised asit should have been. some find this an inferior work to charlotte's eyre, but i found it compelling and i will have to let it settle a bit but i think it might outrate jane eyre as a fav.
