What got me hooked to this book was reading about the demon Bartimaeus. His slightly cynical humor was amusing and by far the most entertaining part of these books. I also enjoyed seeing the development of Nathaniel. He was certainly a jerk in the second book but you saw him progress from young and naive, to a jerk to someone who finally gets the point.

bartimaeus' personality alone made it worth it!! LOL listening to it also helps bring the character to life. it was a thoroughly enjoyable series, though there were no great epiphanies about the human psyche, with the exception of kitty. her journey provided some insight. also, a nice animation of the idea that history repeats itself...read it! :D

Humorous series for the fans of fantasy and magic. Somewhat similar Terry Pratchett's books, but does not wonder off the track so often, thus being more fast paced and easier to read (or was it because of it's intense plot). All three books are filled with sarcastic humor and witty remarks making the reader burst into laughter quite a lot.I truly recommend this book.

I was slightly unimpressed with the first two books because I absolutely could not STAND Nathaniel and had no idea why the protagonist would be such a jerk. However, I grew fond of Bartimaeus and continued to read the books...I opened the first page to the last book and was so sucked in completely...I couldn't believe how great it was and how much closer I suddenly felt to the characters and at the end I bawled my eyes out and cursed Jonathan Stroud for his genius.

I really love this book! It gets you excited and the adventure pumps you up! Bartimaeus has a personality that is so unlike Nathaniels, and yet they work as a great team getting in and out of trouble together. If you are looking for a fun exciting book full of adventure, mystery and magic, this is on of the best books to buy.

While I was reading it I found that parts of it was flat and not-so-entertaining. However, I still enjoyed this series.

I enjoy the parts of the chapters narrated by Bartimaeus. He's sarcastic, humorous, and adds the much needed comic relief. Nathanial on the other hand, sometimes I wanted to reach into the pages and smack him.

I would say that this series is worth reading.
Kind of boring at first. But I enjoyed Bartimaeus' wise cracks and footnotes. I will read this series again one day.

A wonderful trilogy. It is quite funny and lighthearted (thanks to Bartimaeus' abundant sarcastic comments!) but there is also a lot of depth to the books. The characters and their relationships to one another are quite interesting and complex, especially near the end of the trilogy.

Speaking of which, while a lot of people did not like the ending of this trilogy, I thought it was spectacular and - after the initial shock wore off - quite satisfying as well! There are very few books with "sad endings" that leave me feeling anything other than disgruntled and disappointed. I thought in this case, however, that the ending was unexpected but somehow... perfect. And very, very touching. I definitely HIGHLY reccomend this trilogy!

This book is one of my absoloute favorites, and that is saying a lot. There is nothing that can truly describe books such as these. The feels of love, hatred, scorn, pity, and lifelong destiny are impossible to put into words. This book is one that combines many things: humor, the real world, magic, fantasy, adventure, excitment, suspense, and most of all, the inner meaning of our world. That our world simply repeats patterns and that it is up to us to find those patterns and change our world. I once wrote a paragraph on kitty Jones and that, I think, sums up the entire series:
-------------
The quote, “You set me thinking, Bartimaeus, with all your talk of civilizations come and gone. Above all, you said there were patterns to look out for, and I knew I had to find them.” was said by Kathleen Jones in the third book of the Bartimaeus Trilogy: Ptolemy’s Gate. This statement alone shows that she is a unique person with an unusual understanding of her world. What’s more, she is only a teenager who has never experienced any higher level of education than middle school. In a fictional world where cycles of history are repeating themselves and commoners and magicians alike are controlled by those patterns Kitty breaks outside the normal mold before the sequence has arrived in order to save the world she loves. I respect her immensely for this and for several other reasons pertaining to her personality. She will always fight for what she believes in no matter what the cost to herself. In the time directly before the finale of the third book of the series she travels to a state of being called “The Other Place” where the spirits who are summoned live. This challenge has been attempted many times but it has only been accomplished before by Ptolemy, the person who created it. All others who tried to make it there went insane by what they found. Undeterred by this ominous warning, Kitty willingly sends herself to the Other Place risking her mind, soul, and body simply in order to find Bartimaeus, a last hope for a dying world. Not only does Kitty work for her goals, she creates her goals. Everyone in her world knows that there are problems but know one knows what they are or how to fix them. Kitty studies them, takes them apart, and creates her purpose in an impressive fashion. To look at your world, see a problem, and then to take an impossible mission into your own hands in something that few have managed to do, in our world and in hers. Those qualities of absolute determination and her vision of the future inspire me to do new things, work hard in spite of challenges, and to, in my lifetime, do at least one thing that will help save our own world. In our world there is no sudden magic or battles between good and evil but there are ways to defeat seemingly impossible challenges and I am determined to find them. Although Kitty Jones is fictional and never has existed her qualities must have come from somewhere, whether it was a friend, family member, or a stranger that the author met, who inspired them. If a people could have those qualities and be willing to do things such as what Kitty did then I believe that everyone, including me, should be able to do something for our world.
-----------
The Bartimaeus Trilogy is a series which shows the outer nature of people, but also, the inner concious. It sums of the battle of Human Conscious and Human Nature. In other words, Good versus Evil. This book not only tells a fabulous story, it also gives insight into the minds of people, how they work, what they think, and their goals. This book is a need to have on any bookshelf.

One of the best trilogies I've ever read. I think it even beats Harry Potter. Too bad it's not well known. You'll fall in love with Nathaniel and Bartimaeus' love-hate relationship. They can't decide whether they're friends or master and slave. And Bartimaeus' sarcasm will have you laughing on evey page.

A wonderful, funny read that made me put it down only until I can stop laughing! Nathaniel is a brat but you can't help loving him for it. And everyone should have a djin like Bartimaeus in their life, just to keep it real.

An excellent series about a young magician's rise throughout a thoroughly corrupt government in an alternate (but modern day) London. The main surprise in the world is that magicians themselves, do not have actual power, they have to summon various types of djinn to do their bidding for them.

The series is well written and darkly hilarious. Younger readers probably won't understand the sarcasm, nor will they understand significance of Nathaniel's (the magician) internal struggle with his helping hand in a corrupt government.

If not for the sake of a great story, read the series for the last book "Ptolemy's Gate". It's one of the best books I have ever read and has a beautiful and bittersweet end.

The whole trilogy is pritty awesome, constantly wondering what's going to happen next, never read a book like it the Spirit is basically the main character and you see and hear everything in his ways, I would definitely recommend these books to anyone who enjoys a good long read.

This is one GREAT trilogy! I couldn't put it down... . I don't remember if I ate or slept while I read these books. I devoured each book and was heartbroken when I finished the last. This trilogy is smartly written. Jonathan Strouds is amazing. The series lacks nothing. Bigger than life adventure, characters, suspense, humor, you name it…it’s in there. I laughed out loud many times at the sarcastic lovable Bartimaeus who, on one hand could warm your heart and then turn around in a blink of an eye and scare the pants off you. But I promise...read one book and you'll be hooked. These books really are in a league of their own, but I suppose if you HAD to compare…it reads along the same lines as Harry Potter meets Lord of the Rings…sort of. Just go read it already!!!

A somewhat dystopian magician's government; as he walks the cursus honorum, the main character continues to become exactly what he once hated. Punctuated by hilarious comments and footnotes from Bartimaeus himself.

Take Alladin's Genie and give him the sarcasm of Taming of the Shrew's Kate and you have the narrator of these stories. Now imagine an alternate London ruled by magicians. Next take Charlie Bucket and give him Voldemort's ambition and Harry Potter's propensity for getting into trouble and you have the main character (and butt of all the narrator's jokes). Throw in some of the Inheritance Cycle's thrilling action and gravity defying fight scenes and some petty drama worthy of Gossip Girl and the writings of an ancient egyptian sorcerer named Ptolomey (no suprises there) and you have a jolly good read. The first and Second and most of the Third book contain little more than some really exciting (and extremely well written) action sequences and stupid puns. They are in fact little more than set-ups for the heartbreaking bawl-your eyes out ending. I can't say what happens except that there is an ultimate sort of happy sort of sad ending. A good read for those over the age of thirteen.

This series was just meant to be an HP rebound for me, but I ended up really caring about it. Like the Great Rowling, Stroud's really good at making serious moral questions exciting by giving them a magical spin; but where Harry is a sympathetic character that has greatness thrust upon him, Nathaniel is a total douche for most of the books and only discovers his conscience in the final showdown. It'd be like HP following Draco Malfoy's moral development (if, you know, Draco ended up acting unselfishly and saving the day).
