I have always loved this book. The movie was great too but I did not like the artistic license taken there!

This novel is like a great canvas cut and folded into the size and shape of a book wherein Cooper paints an extraordianry picture of Native American values and colonial life. Saddening and maddening, this novel points out the utter futility of even the noblest native son

Early American history where the English and French bring their baggage to American turf while utilizing vassal Indian tribes to help fight their battles while innocent settlers get fisted when the powers that be deem it necessay. Ah! the good old days.

hawkeye is the most virtuous fictional character I can recall. the set of leatherstocking tales are all great reading.

So it may have been me, but I really did not like Last of the Mohicans until I was about halfway through. Perhaps my expectations were too high after The Deerslayer, which I loved. There just seemed to be too much back and forth in the beginning. When I reached the halfway point, suddenly I felt like I was back into what I had enjoyed so much before. I feel like I'm rediscovering my home state and so much of what I love about New York - its wilds and endless trees and mountains and lakes. It really makes me wonder what it was like to wander through it before it was settled as it is today. We still have our wilds, but they don't stretch as far as they once did. I am concerned about his presentation of the Haudenosaunee/Iroquois, but thought perhaps the closeness of Hawkeye to the various tribes of northeastern Native Americans brings him some kind of forgiveness for his attitude.

This is a hard classic for me to have an opinion on. On one hand, Cooper has written a fast-paced, exciting adventure with plenty of food for thought. On the other, I dare you to show a more annoying cast of characters who exist for little more than melodrama and philosophy. Still, it's a powerful and well-written novel with plenty of action and marvelous, spot-on descriptions. Sometimes it gets bogged down in itself and the characters leave something to be desired. But, as a good adventure read, I must say it does hit the spot.
