This was a beautiful book, one of the best accounts that I have read of war from the perspective of a child. Very beautifully written and a tribute to a city that suffered greatly during the war (WWII).It reads quickly as well. . .

I've only just begun to read this novel in the original Albanian (the version I have was published in 1971), and from what I can grasp of the first few pages, it appears that one of the things Kadare is trying to show the reader is how closed-minded a society can be. Another is the things it does in order to escape the hardships it faces. The time period the story takes place seems to be around the years 1939-43 in Albania. Obviously since the book was written in '71 (a year during which Communist Enver Hoxha was in control) it is critical of the facist regime, the Italian occupation, the King of Albania on the surface. In this way it can show you a lot about the period in which it was published. But most importantly it seems to place an emphasis on the cold, isolated position in which this state found itself. I find it interesting so far. The use of colloquialisms, something I'm not used to in Albanian (even when reading other works in Albanian), allow me to place myself into the situations described easily. The point of view is that of a young boy, an analytical one at that :).
