Was told that I was snobbish about books, snubbing graphic novels, comics and sci-fi and was told that I had to read these collections. This series is so brilliant in its characters and mythology. The Endless and their relationships are fascinating. Delirium is one of my favorite characters of all time. My favorite quote- "These cherries taste like forever." Read every single volume and also the offshoots on Death. I love how Gaiman makes Death such a comforting prescence.

The story is about a dream lord (The Sandman) who is on a journey towards regaining his former power that was lost after having been kept locked in confinement for decades. It's not always clear what's happening, but Gaiman keeps us suspended while waiting for answers to form themselves. Also, Gaiman is more artful in his approach and has less literal exposition than comics before this time (though he is not totally free of that cornball comic language).

Could be the best in the series of Graphic novels of the Sandman series! I want a copy of my own. the eighth book was astounding: I might be in love with the SandMan's older sister - Death (so sexy in her goth/Lolita design)!

I can't put it down after reading a few pages of it. I have known about this series of books for many years now and have only attempted to read them because I was curious why it is so hot! Now I know. Very inventive, imaginative series.

Neil Gaiman is a veritable god in his ability to recreate the normal world into something from a fantasy. Throughout this graphic novel, and the entirety of the series, Gaiman mixes the world of dreams, death, hell with the world of the every day. Death is the epitome of 80s goth, but a smile never seems to leave her pretty face. Morpheus, King of Dreams, walks through earth, heaven and hell to find relics lost to him long ago. Reading this-and the others-is like watching yourself dream. You are sucked in to the story, to the dreamscape he has created in his stories and after the last page you feel as though you'll never quite wake up again.

With out a doubt, this set of animated tales by Neil Gaiman, are unequaled in prose and artistry.

Now, in English- This set rocks. From all of the different artist involved in its creation, one would think it would be chaotic. It was, in that unique and breathtaking way, that seems to happen only once in most lifetimes. I realize this is a bit pretentious, but try them, you will see what I mean....May you always Dream.

reading through the demon (which got progressively more colourful, dumbed down and satirical to its detriment) i found plenty of recommendations for the sandman. i went to my local comic retailer, and picked up this first volume, deciding i would give it a go. i never looked back.

the artwork is varied, but not particularly striking; it is the dialogue, and the story that gaiman weaves skillfully and cleverly that left me speechless; the premise is beautifully and intruigingly presented, and continues to impress upon rereading; an astonishing attention to detail and an intricate and complicated web of links between the stories and characters make this is a powerful introduction to the series.

it includes a number of popular characters from other DC titles, to great effect, fortunately, and the overarching stories of the volume function as a self contained story, as well as an effective and tantalisingly suggestive introduction. burgess tries to summon and therefore render ineffective death itself; instead capturing dream. eventually, dream escapes his imprisonment, and we follow him as he must regain his tools of power and return everything to its previous status quo. this serves to introduce us to his realm, its denizens and some of the other important figures in the story; death and the devil, for example.

an excellent graphic novel, that displays the potential of the comic medium for interesting and meaningful storytelling

Okay, I'm--somewhat reluctantly--converted. I still don't like the art style of most American comics (although I actually did like pretty much all the art in "The Sound of Her Wings"--wish all the comics looked more like that) because I don't know, really, I just don't...but the premise and characters are plenty fascinating enough to make me want more.

This is the first collected graphic novel of what is widely considered to be the finest comic book series ever written, Neil Gaimans Sandman.Theres no easy way to describe this series, save to say that its a feat of imaginative storytelling almost without parallel. The main character is inspired from one of the forgotton heroes of the 1930s and 40s DC universe and completely reinterpreted in a way that combines elements of modern-day superhero comics, but primarily draws on older myth and legends from the great older world cultures, including Egyptian, Norse, Celtic and Japanese myth cycles. At its heart is Dream of the Endless, and this is the story of how he lost his power, regained it, and struggled with the responsibilities and the changes that were wrought upon him as a result. With a supporting cast of hundreds, including the Endless, the Devil and assorted demons, and all manner of gods and monsters, this is a simply stunning piece of imaginative fiction that any fan of fantasy, or of writing in general, really should read.

I have never been a graphic novel fan, but being an avid Neil Gaiman fan, I was finally convinced to read this series. This one, as my rating suggests, was amazing. It has a suitably dark, intriguing, and macabre plotline and despite being a comic book manages to stray away from the superhero cliche. Hey, that rhymes!! Anyone versed in mythology will find the references to and portrayals of well known characters extremely entertaining. This is not a book to be saved for a rainy day, go out now and devour it.

Umm... wow. I've read Gaiman before, always in either poetry form or prose. I've lauded him as an excellent writer, spinning disturbing/whimsical/droll tales with a flick of his pen. But this is something else. Never would I have imagined the best Gaiman would come from the graphic novel medium, but I am very tempted to say that now. Although there were some things that I didn't like (the D.C. characters appearing without warning and with no explanation and the sometimes downright disturbing images), the pure beauty and characterization Gaiman gives Dream, Death, and even Lucifer sends chills down my spine. After the last issue, I immediately went out to get the second. Even though I have yet to read the next installment, this seems like only the beginning to a haunting, gorgeous and philosophical series that is purely Gaiman.

I first heard about the Sandman series when I saw all the adverts for it as a kid in the back of my "Detective Comics" subscription. I was intrigued, but I was also a poor 7th grader, and easily frightened, so I didn't buy them.

Now that I've finally started reading them, all I can say is that I wish I hadn't spent so much time reading Batman comics. Cause Sandman is leagues better. Even comparing them is kinda insulting.

It's fantastic. This volume is just bursting with imagination and creativity in a way that few other comics do. How could I have been so clueless?
