Such a beautiful book. I fell in love with it in grade 12 and have re-read it numerous times. This will be the book I give to my daughters when they're in high school.

Set in the early-mid twentieth century in rural Ontario, Wright captures exactly the culture and the mannerisms. It's both sweet and progressive. If you're into historical fiction or "strong women" type books, you'll love it.

This poignant tale, set in the 1930s,is about two sisters with contrasting approaches to life. One, a school teacher, has stayed in their small home town in Ontario while the other, an aspiring actress, has gone off to seek her fortune in New York City. It is beautifully written story with a good measure of social history.

I really enjoyed this book. It was an interesting way to write a story, using only journal entries and letters, to build your characters and plot, etc. It did end abruptly and left me wanting to know more. It was almost like the author got tired of writing the story and so just ended. I would recommend this book to friends. It was the sort of book I could see assigned in a university english literature class - lots of symbolism & historical overtures.

Another great example of feminist lit from a historical perspective. Clara is irreverent and struggles to fit into her "place" in the early part of the century in a tight, rural community. Covers issues of media, family, as well as history. Beautifully written by Wright. A recommended read!

I enjoyed it. I'm not sure it resides among 'great literature', although Wright has plenty of awards to show for his efforts. The story sort of meanders and then ends abruptly (I thought), and the afterword was a little puzzling; I didn't think it really added to the story, but I guess he felt that it would tie up loose ends. But it was a fun, quick read and I liked the main character Clara.

So good. Wright perfectly captures the era while presenting a modern perspective - complete with strong female characters.

I liked this. The format (using letters and journal entries to tell the story) sucked me in. Social history as a novel.

One of the worst books I've ever read, but for some reason I refused to put it down. The characters were completely unbelievable and I was often bored to tears. Plus, what was up with the afterword?
