Well written. Funny. Easy to read.
As a fellow "home farmer", I totally understand the writer's frustration with all the bugs and vermins that attacked his garden.

This starts out as a witty, entertaining essay and goes on way too long. Many of the later chapters feel forced.

I laughed out loud while reading about the trials of this gardener/farmer and his musings on nature and his part in it. The author's experience with gardening translates to any of us with a hobby that begins with joy and grows laborious rather than luxurious. And it was a timely read as it reminded me to treat the lawn for grubs post haste.

I like this because other books with this world view, "eat local", "grow your own food" make it look so easy. People like Barbara Kingsolver just plant seeds and then she is bringing in TONs of veggies. There is a lot of invisible knowlege there that most people don't have. This book felt real to me, a city girl trying to learn to grow my own food. I read all these books that turned me on to gardening, but they never mentioned all the problems! Squash borers, wilts, powdery mildew! Gardening is not easy and this book felt real!

I can't cook. I can't grow plants. But maybe that's why this book was entertaining and, yes, a great insight to the many rises and falls of gardening. Lighthearted...and a great connection with the author for anyone who's ever tried to spearhead a major project.

This book has its moments but I don't have much in common with the author. No garden of mine is starting with blue prints from the landscape architect. I am hoping to produce this spring a harvest of honey that probably will have cost me about $20 a pound so I can relate to the concept!

Funny, endearing and relatable. Commendable in that it demonstrates the enjoyability and necessity of being tied to the land -- and reaches readers who wouldn't necessarily be reading a book that sends that message.

I loved this book, but then again, I love a good story teller and William Alexander is an excellent story teller. If you have read any books by Bill Bryson, such as "A Walk in the Woods" you will know how this book is written, they are very similar. But as my wife pointed out, Alexander has a little more edge to him.

This is the story of a man with a dream. A dream of being a "gentleman farmer". Each chapter is an adventure in gardening. I laughed out loud in places. The book is simply too true. I have thought the same things and made the same mistakes with our garden. Maybe the fact someone else is making the same mistakes helps.
