Ever wanted a pet dragon? You will after you read this novel. I did. Pratchett has this fantastic habit of taking what you thought you knew, turning it around, sticking it inside out and giving back to you upside down. And in this novel he does it again. Brilliantly.Sam Vimes and the Watch try (hard by ineffectually) to stop an enormous dragon, summoned by an overreaching would be king and cult leader, from destroying Ankh Morpork. Fortunately for Vimes, the local Swamp Dragon lady takes a shine to him and gives him Errol, a sad, pathetic little dragon, more along the lines of a cute puppy than a fire breathing beast. Read it and you'll understand.

This is the first Discworld novel I read and sets the basis for all of the Ankh-Morpork stories. Superb!

An introduction to Sam Vimes, the mean, alcoholic Night Watchman himself, and his band of dodgy Watchmen. Great book, one which can be read over and over, and one which I think puts an original spin on the dragon myth.
