Was ein abgefahrenes Buch.

Well, of course the critics liked it - a celebrity endorsing homosexuality - who would dare criticise it? However, in my opinion, whilst the writing was very funny and the characters were authentic, the strands of the plot were not well woven together. It could have been much more, but ended up seeming quite lame.

This is pure, 100% Fry. It is far from one of the best books I read, but it is still well worth the read. Interesting, a bit funny and quite a bit more dirty.

Good, entertaining novel with a surprise ending. Perfect book for reading on a long-distance bus driving through the countryside of Oaxaca.

A sort of QI thriller. Revels in its erudition; delightfully bawdy.

The Liar comes as Stephen Fry's literary debut, and it's certainly an ambitious attempt. Telling the tale of chronic liar Adrian Healey, The Liar jumps around in both time and location. One minute we're accompanying Adrian on his journey through private school, then we see him at Cambridge, then we go back to his time teaching at a prep school, and so on. I won't bore you by talking about the plot since you can untangle it yourself, just like I had to, but sufficeth to say that it's feels like Fry has put a lot of his own experiences into the book. The descriptions of boarding school life and Cambridge seem almost autobiographical in tone, and the emphasis upon homosexuality is clearly related to Fry's own sexual bias. In many ways, the writing is occasionally clumsy and the plot takes too long to unravel, but once it does, it feels impossible to put the book down until you've finished it, and considering it's a debut novel, it's a damn fine effort.

I enjoyed this book, would totally recommend it but pay attention when reading as you may become confused! It skips back and forth a bit, you love, hate and pity the main character and the end has a delicious twist to it. Screamingly funny and rather rude.

A hilarious novel. I loved not only the brilliant naughtiness of Fry, but the poetic narrative quality and the way in which I think I can see glimpses of Fry's own life and mind. It does, admittedly, jump around, but I was able to keep just about abreast of that and adored it. Fry pretty much at his best.

The lies that men tell feature's heavily in Stephen Fry's debut novel. Murder, intrigue and nations spying on each other all feature in this best seller as the main protagonist, Adrian, tells lie after lie after lie until finally the consequences of his lies come home to roost.

I could just picture Stephen Fry reading this to me...is that fortunate or unfortunate? The flipness of the book belies its genuinely philosophically inquisitive nature -- coincidentally & fabulously enough. My one problem with the book is that its beginning, all Swimming Pool Library and 'Can this kid really be 15?? And nobody's breaking his nose?', has very little to do with the Scooby-Doo-with-a-PhD ending/middle. But it did all make me think -- is what I am when I am young a lie if I change? Is change in the world, in the self, possible? but then again, what about performance? (the book, the magazine, the play of the fake Dickens, everyone else's lies to gain an end...) Definitely a worthwhile read. Loved the references.

"Fry's debut novel is all one would expect from such a distinguished polymath..and more! A twisting plot with many a delightful surprise and Fry's characteristic love affair with English language being amply demonstrated on every page . Quite simply a joy. One niggle however - I was not credited with providing the background information for the "biscuit game" scene. a small gripe maybe, buts Stephen (as I call him) and I spent many a happy evening throughout the summer of 93 working hard at mastering this pivotal part of the narrative, I feel somewhat used, soiled even. Otherwise a joy !" - Gareth Rushton, TLS

Läste just om "Lögnaren". Stephen Fry är (så klart) sjukt rolig och påminner inte så lite om Wilde och Waugh. Cricket kapitlet är dock helt obegripligt....

The first half is an interesting journey through the protagonist's young life (he bears some resemblance to the author - but hey, they say write what you know...). The book then becomes a strange, airport novel-like mess in the second half, with plot hole after plot hole and no satisfactory resolution. It's like a portrait of the queer young artist that segues into Robert Ludlum on too much pain pills.

Partly autobiographical, this book chronicles the school and university life of Adrian, a compulsive liar; through a series of (mis)adventures we travel across Europe, get involved in a bizarre espionage tale, come in to contact with some of the less savoury rituals of British public school life, and meet some larger than life characters in an hilarious and gripping tale. A must for Stephen Fry fans!
