This is my favourite sort of Christie; political espionage, thriller type stuff. Very much of its time and social class, which appeals to me exceedingly.

AMAZING...quite possibly my favorite of hers to date. mmmmm. i got a little worried there for a little bit in the middle as i tried to puzzle it all out. (didn't call it either with all my suspicions!)

I have a tendency to figure out the 'punchline' of mysteries too early and spoil the story for myself...took me about 5 minutes to work out The Crying Game...but this one, which I read many years ago, kept me guessing to the very last page!

I read the entire Agatha Christie's collection as a teenager. I remember them as being very entertaining, and badly translated into Portuguese. And no, I did not have anything better to do at the time (or so I thought). Anyway, I loved the suspense, the middle-upper class settings , and a lot of the characters - not necessarily the detectives.

The story suffers from a fanciful plot, which is embarrassingly ignorant in places and full of dated racial stereotypes - although I daresay there was not much batting of eyelids among a 1920's public relatively ill-informed of far flung areas of the world. While it was good to see the author construct dialogue between characters that wasn't always of the 'jolly good show, old chap' variety, the unrealistic utterances of some of the foreign characters was painful to endure. If you managed to take the ridiculous underlying theme of the fictitious Eastern European monarchy with a pinch of salt, the crime was the classic sort that served Christie so well over the years; a murder in an English country house with plenty of guests to suspect, three of whom are sensationally unmasked at the end as not who they seemed to be (two of them will definitely catch you by surprise). The cleverly worked ending salvaged an unconvincing plot for me.
