Agatha Christie is not on her best with stories about spies or international crisis, but this is a lovely divertimento. I enjoyed it very much. The writer's own experiences in her husband's archeological expeditions in Iraq gave a realistic and somewhere nostalgic -it was written in 1950- background to the story. Loved the main character, Victoria Jones.

I read the entire Agatha Christie collection as a teenager. I remember them as being very entertaining, and badly translated into Portuguese. And no, I did not have anything better to do at the time (or so I thought). Anyway, I loved the suspense, the middle-upper class settings , and a lot of the characters - not necessarily the detectives.

Another nonseries 'girl-adventurer' novel from Christie, full of intrigue, local color, and world-takeover conspiracies with the froth level set on a delightful 'frappe.' Her knowledge of archaelogy (she was devoted to her husband, archaeologist Max Mallowan, and accompanied him on many of his digs) and talent for conveying sense of place (Iraq at the twilight of British rule, from the perspective of an insouciant Briton) delight as well.
