I am a fan of Hardy's, so I decided to give this less known title a go. I am enjoying it but hard at times... It's Hardy through and through. It is not to be rushed though it is better savoured. The story doesn't matter, what realy matters is how he tells it. Have a dictionary at hand for those words with nil index of frequency in the english language today. Poor foreign students who have to read it! like I was one once. My heart goes out to them. The thing is in 200 hundred years time someone will be wondering " what on earth is a web designer"...

 "Frailty, thy name is woman."

If there is any truth in this statement, Eustacia Vye personifies it. She gets what she does not desire and does not deserve either. Fate is a bit harsh on her. Her end strengthens our belief that Contentment, although rare, is a valuable Virtue

Complex, yet weak characters dominate while the real treasure is hidden under a mask of red. Reminded me of the Woodlanders for some reason. We don't get what we want. We reject what we deserve. As always, the land is ever present filled to the brim with colorful country folks.

Not Hardy's best story, but the writing is excellent. The opening description of Egdon heath is fantastic. She might be trouble, but I wouldn't mind meeting Eustacia.

Since I don't know much about 19th century life, I wish my library had an edition with footnotes, so I could understand all the colloquialisms. But I'm still enjoying it.
