The beginning with just him on a mountain is incredible... when he returns to civilization again it's classic (but pretty conventional) Kerouac.

This Kerouac novel borders with Big Sur in dealing with his alcoholism. His attempts to isolate himself tended to increase his consumption when he returned to civilization, in this case from a firewatch tower on a mountain in Washington state. His later books lack the Zen insight of the younger Kerouac.

Quite a story. Great detail regarding NW mountain vistas. Kinda rambles, but that's what he does.
