The first Poirot mystery that I ever read. I knew of the character thanks to David Suchet's definitive portrayal on British television, as well as Albert Finney's hammy but fun assay of the character in the excellent and star-filled film production of MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. In that vein, I might add that I do not care at all for Peter Ustinov's attempts at the part. He is too cumbersome and broad to do justice to Poirot, and the movies he took part in were not great, but they were entertaining. As for this novel, it's great fun, has all the usual Christie elements, and it was written at about the halfway point in the series, so all the stuff one wants in a typical English murder mystery is there. The only thing that doesn't quite make it is the ending, which feels too much like a _deus ex machina_, but that does not ruin the fun. Great fun! If you are thinking of reading it, save it until Christmas ... to give yourself a break from the treacly effects that that particular holiday can induce.

Couldn't stop reading it, fantastic book. You don't now who Killed the old man, plus it kept me on the edge of my seat.
