I love her writing. She's always sauntering along the line between comedy and drama. Her characters are so weird and familiar.

Boring. I couldn't even finish reading it! Maybe the story went somewhere in the end, but I just couldn't force myself through such a boring and pointless story to find out.

I enjoyed this novel but I was disappointed with the end.
But, satisfied the protagonist can start a new chapter in her life (perhaps less troublesome). Reminds me of the teens I worked with.

Definiely a good read; showed a small window in portraying difficulties experienced as a teenager living in a dysfunctional home life.

Miriam Toews is a skillful writer. Humour and great understanding issues from the tale of a family shunned by their religious community. The author speaks through the voice of a tough, funny and sometimes insightful teenage. The father and daughter relationship which dominated the novel is finely drawn. The book is universal scop extends from the small prairie town of the characters into the world beyond. I found this book a treasure.

Fascinating portrayal of the world in a Mennonite community and the way that life weighs upon a young teenage girl. A reminder of how fundamental religion can oppress, rather than free. Written like a diary, (running prose in generally in the present tense and also with limited puctuation) it has confused bits that has the reader looking for more - and much is revealed as the book progresses. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but I found I could not put this one down.

Hilarious and endearing...a great story about a Mennonite teen trying to find her place.

I finished this book and wondered when the story was going to start. I finished it quickly, not because I found it hard to put down, but rather because it was so dull and I felt obligated to finish since I had invested time reading the first part.
