A book for all Christians or for anyone trying to understand them. I don't think it's possible to be reminded often enough of the nature and basis of hope in the Christian faith.

Pope Benedict's second Encyclical, dealing with the theological virtue of Hope. Benedict demonstrates the scriptural basis for hope as integral to the Christian understanding of salvation, and uses that as a launching pad to explore precisely how the Christian virtue of hope is now, more than ever, something that a world without hope needs.

Wonderful read, easy to follow. Appreciated the history lesson, all the false hopes that humanity has placed trust in and has failed them: science, politics, psychology. In speaking on Christian Hope and how to cultivate it in today's society, Pope Benedict speaks to a world truly ready for Christ's saving hope.

I was prepared to just sort of like this, as encyclicals are not always the most gripping reads, but I was engaged and even moved in several places. I think Benedict has figured out a way to connect with the angst generation. Now if only people would read it...

Benedict is a wonderful writer. He is also insightful about Christianity's challenge to force modernity into an honest self-critique so that society may move beyond its idolatry of "progress." I enjoyed the beginning of the encyclical very much but as a Protestant was less than impressed with the end. But this is a in house message to fellow Roman Catholics so I can hardly complain. What did bother me a bit was a jab at Luther close to the beginning where BXVI insists that Luther misappropriated Hebrews 11:1 by making faith a matter of subjective conviction rather than objective proof. I haven't read what Luther has to say on Hebrews but know that such a view could not have belonged to the mature Luther who held that faith was inner conviction provided to the believer with contact to the exterior preached word. BXVI also claims, with no cited evidence, that Luther was not fond of the Letter to the Hebrews, which is belied by the fact that Luther based his Christology on it.
