I wouldn't know, but I can believe Virgil's Latin is more stately and dignified than Fagles translation. Still, it is great entertainment. I loved it.

More poetic, albeit less original, than Homer's Odyssey, Virgil's Aeneid is my preferred national epic as it seems more complex when you consider the history behind the text itself. One of the all-time classics in literature.

If any translation's going to do it, this will... but it's still a translation and somehow the harrowing bits aren't quite as harrowing. Aeneas is still an idiot.

Anyone who had to translate this from the original latin knows how it is to hate this book so much that you eventually become resigned to loving it. Perhaps it brainwashed me. Or maybe it just got to me. All I know is that I never want to even see this book again, but I will defend it to the death.

Lombardo knows what he's doing. Down to the simile, everything is beautiful. Everyone should read this book because it shreds wheats.

Read it after the Iliad. It's pathetic how one-dimensional this epic in comparison to Homer's. A good read, but lacks the subtlety of Homer and Greek tragedy.
