I am not so much reading this as being possessed by it. Woke up again trying to recall the lines that follow the Mariner's cry "A sail, a sail"!

It's not terrible, but it's not fantastic either. It has memorable lines ("The Nightmare Life-in-Death") and has a gothic theme, but is nothing special.

You have to be in the mood for poetry, and I agree with Tolkien (or was it C. S. Lewis?) who said that poetry is best read aloud, and by someone who can read well. The music of the words is what's important in poetry, and Coleridge is a connsumate master of the craft. The tale is excellent as well, albeit a bit hard to understand at times.

Been meaning to read this for years - inspired by Iron Maiden! Anyway, given the epic nature of the song, I always assumed that the poem would be equally daunting in length. However, whilst it's not a 3-line ditty, I was pleasantly surprised that it's not a complete monster either. Anyways, it's all a pretty good story, that's really fun to read too. Well worth the time to track down!
