There is something special about this famous literary author. One cannot discard the beauty of his writing and how he forces one 'to think'. I will simply share the first line that captured me...the last line and one of many from 'somwhere in the middle':First line: 'All day in the office, evenings at a party, at night in the streets, and nothing to excess. Superb. I especially recommend: The Metamorphosis, In the Penal Colony, A Hunger Artist, The Burrow, A Fratricide, the Bridge, A Crossbreed, A Common Confusion, The Silence of the sirens, Prometheus, Poseidon and On Parables. Some are tough reading but all worth the effort.

I felt good for having finished it, but was (in general) pretty freaked out by how Kafka's mind worked.

"Metamorphosis" may be my favorite story of all time. And, c'mon, the edition I have also has "Hunger Artist": another great story.

Kafka's novels are of course genius.. but for me, the magic is found in the short stories. They're beautiful, funny, compelling, sad, surreal.. and you go through a huge amount of emotions. All the while you're getting to know one of the legends of modern literature. He'll surprise you, I guarantee it. Put all your pre-conceptions aside and get to know the real Franz Kafka.

The first book I haven't been able to finish for a long time. I managed "Metamorphosis", although it is strange and sad. Read "The Great Wall of China" even though it seemed pointless, because it is short. But just couldn't get on with "Investigations of a dog" - a very strange stream of conscious where nothing seems to happen. I might have got more out of it if the edition I was reading (Vintage Classics) had some notes to get me started with what it was all about...
