A little too... sentimental? I enjoyed the personal narrative but it's a little too much. I think a lot of people would have trouble finishing the book -- you have to care a lot about where your food is coming from, exactly, and how hard/easy it is to find out.

Took me awhile to get through this but it has pretty much changed my view on food. I would love to know that the food I am buying and eating is from a local farm and not super processed.

This book was recommended to me by a couple we met on holidays this fall. They are organic ranchers and I suggested that they read Grass, Sky, Song by Trevor Herriot so then they suggested I read this book. It is an eye-opening book about the way food is produced in the industrial world. Pollan traces the ingredients of four meals: a fast food meal of chicken nuggets, an organic meal with items produced by the big organic growers, a meal using chicken fed on grass and slaughtered in an open air farm facility and a meal that was hunted and gathered by the author himself. If you read this book you will never look at food in the same way. Most of us are so far removed from the production of food that we have no idea how it makes it from the farm or ranch to our plates. After Pollan's description of the huge feed lots in which most of American beef is produced I feel even more strongly that I need to find a source of grass-raised beef. And if you think the answer is to buy organic this book will make you rethink that solution. It may not be possible to buy everything locally or that is raised in a sustainable manner but it is worth attempting. The final paragraph of the book sums up what Pollan is trying to convey:
"...imagine for a moment if we once again knew...these few unremarkable things: What it is we're eating. Where it came from. How it found its way to our table. And what, in a true accounting, it really cost...we would no longer need any reminding that however we choose to feed ourselves, we eat by the grace of nature, not industry, and what we're eating is never anything more or less than the body of the world"

The section on agri-business is especially interesting, and could very well cause you to make different choices at the grocery store! Great section on sustainable farming - much to think about. Section on hunting and gathering your own food was so -so.

I'm not big on books that don't tell a real story, but it's an interesting read on how food in America really is.

Great style and complement to his other, "In Defense of Food". The author trudges, searches, stalks, for food from plant, fungi, and meat. Along the way discussing the implications of food in today's society. Charming, funny, and informative.

It was fascinating. Especially the part about hunting for 'shrooms. But this guy's smug and cocky tone made me toss the window out the book...... I mean..toss the book out the window... a few times. Retrieving it from the chards of glass on the sidewalk got old after a while. He's a very annoying man, this author.
