Such a compelling and powerful novel of Hosseini. Gives you an overview of what Islam is and really should be. The author didn't attempt to paint Afghanistan as a country misunderstood but painted it instead as a country based on his characters' encounters and vivid memories.

One couldn't say that there is a particular theme talked about in this work. Themes are universal: family, friendship, one's sense of nationalism, patriotism, the social classes (that still exist up to theses days)and many more.

Hosseini made a great debut with this work and I am looking forward to reading A Thousand Splendin Suns.

A heartrending story set in a warpacked country. I found it somewhat too dramatic and histrionic which was like a papercup brimming with surfeited tears.
