This the was one of the books that first got me interested in Psychology. Though written through the author's clinical experience, it's an easy enough read for anyone to understand. Comparing the stories of the girls in the book to various life events of my own allowed me to introspectively peek at the consequences that could come from the issues I held in my own mind and a platform from which to start a journey of healing.

All parents of teenage girls should read this book! Anyone who knows a teenage girl should read this book. In fact, anyone who was a teenage girl should probably read this book, too.

This is a great book with lots of insight, although it is getting a bit outdated. Some great case studies and commentary, but not for those who don't have an interest in psychology or raising young girls.

Although it is now almost 15 years old, I doubt much has changed in the world for female adolescents. Eye opening and scary, but good knowledge and offers hope and insight for how to help our teenage daughters grow up connected and with a strong sense of self, despite societies pressures. A must read for any parent of a daughter.

Recommend to the parents who has daughter. This book kind of shocked me about the life of junior high girls in the states. It is totallly different from my junior high or high school years. Very informative and makes me feel it is such a blessing that my kids can grow up in church which can provide a little more protection!

This book is incredible! I would recommend this for anyone who has a daughter, sister, wife, or girl friend. I would recommend this to every woman and man on earth. It is such an eye opening book, and it contains incredible truths about the struggles and pressures facing adolescent girls and the impact these struggles have on the women they become.

It was amazing to me how reading this book took me right back to Jr. High and helped me understand some of the struggles I had 30 years ago. I did find it unfortunate that the only advocates or role models for girls the author mentioned were liberal democrats. I would have appreciated a more balanced approach. Nevertheless, this was an enlightening read.

This was a much faster read than I expected. I don't have children (and won't ever) but it was refreshing to read and think back to my adolescent years and know that I was behaving just like almost every other girl my age. The author gives numerous case studies as examples of the problems girls face today and then compares and contrasts them with problems she faced in her youth. The book was written in about 1994, but is not as outdated as one would think. Things have changed even more, sure, but this book definitely provides a good jumping-off-point. Definitely recommended for parents, teachers, doctors, counselors and, in fact, any woman.

I'll admit, when I was doing therapy I was fairly terrified of working with adolescent girls. This is a timeless advice for therapists. It's encouraging and motivating. It almost makes me want to work with some gals . . . ok, maybe not. ;)

Jay Adams says that men should be a "student of their wife", 1Pt.3, living with their wife according to knowledge. so why not read books that give insight into your wife's past?

I must say, regardless of what women say/do in public..or even in relationships, there is a secret heart that is true behind them all that must be known/adhered to. Doubt the lies and false impressions, the appearances...when they don't act according to the fully dignity they were created to be. he is the image of God, whose body is to be a temple of God.. and I believe women should be challenged to live it out. It's what they really need. [insane to learn about the lives of women who sell themselves short by buying into the deceptions of modern media on body, sexuality, etc.]
I love studying female psychology...to admire God's work. this is good, among others..

Lots of handwringing over how terrible it is to be a teenage girl growing up in the '90s. I was a teenage girl in the 90s; my childhood sucked; I even read it in high school; truth be told, I was going through a very difficult time in my life when it was assigned to me in class; but I still found the book whiny, and lacking in theory and research. Maybe it's because I was dealing with issues more weighty than dying my hair green. I just couldn't relate to the case studies. The girls were presented as very pathetic little people, "saplings in a storm". It just felt like more youth-bashing, from the same baby boomers who labeled my generation crack babies and super predators.

This is an excellent book for parents of pre-teen girls. It is full of case studies highlighting many issues that exist amongst teen girls. The book also discusses parent/child relationships and how that relationship changes drastically during the teen years. There are tips on building confidence in your daughter, helping her to make difficult choices and how to maintain open communciation during the teen years. I will read this book again when my daughter approaches teens.

Every person with a young girl in his/her life needs to read this book. I've had it on my shelf since my girls were babies, and I know I'll read it again as they get closer to adolescence. I want to be able to do everything I possibly can to keep my girls strong and whole through adolescence, while popular culture works to break them apart. It's the closest thing to a parenting manual I've found.

It was written in something like 1994, and even though I don't feel like 1994 was that long ago, I guess it was, because much of what the author says about the age the girls are living in feels really dated. There are still some good observations there about adolescent girls that I did take notes on, that will help me as a parent, but when I got down to the last 40 pages or so, I just couldn't finish it. It became more about her journey as a psychologist, and her own experiences in life. I'm guessing her to be about my parents' age, so I really couldn't relate to any of that.

I agree with many of Pipher's assessments of our culture's impact on adolescent girls.

For example, when Pipher says that an adolescent girl may find that her future has suddenly narrowed to only a few possibilities, I remembered my own feelings of despair as a sixth grade girl. Our school's "career counselor" asked a roomful of girls, "What do you want to be when you grow up? A nurse, a teacher, a secretary, or a stay-at-home mother?" Forget wanting to be president, a scientist, or even a truck driver; the counselor laid out the only realistic choices for us girls. Unfortunately, from what I gleaned by reading this book, not much has changed for many of today's teenage girls, who still find that their choices are limited.

However, I take issue with other parts of the book. Interspersed with her advice & interesting accounts of individual case histories are Pipher's warnings that THINGS TODAY ARE NOT THE SAME AS WHEN YOU, THE PARENT, WERE A TEENAGER! She makes it sound as though drugs in school, promiscuous girls, macho teenage boys, teenage drinking, teen pregnancy, & sexy media images are new problems. On the contrary, I remember these same problems from my own high school in the '70s. It seems to me that these problems have grown worse with time, & that the change is only a matter of degree, not a whole set of new troubles.

Toward the end of the book, the author describes her own upbringing in a Mayberry-esque cozy little town of 400. Apparently her sheltered childhood & adolescence account for her shocked reaction to problems faced by today's teens. The way she reacts, it is as though she passed through a time warp straight from the '50s into the '90s. I was left discouraged & puzzled, & wondering where she was during the '60s, '70s & '80s.

Overall, I think that this book is not bad, & it has a lot of useful information for parents. However, it would be a much better book without the author's shocked comments on how much everything has changed for the worse.
