thought the writing was really good (a crap description of someones writing abilities I am aware) and the characters were developed to a certain extent - but then..... what??? where is the ending? where are ann kelly says is the closure?

has Sarah Waters left it open for a second part? I was slightly disappointed with the outcome of the characters - how did Kay and oh my god her name escapes me split up after she finds her after the bomb? it was all so confusing!!

Like the style of writing though and would definately read more of her books....

Well-written, interesting characters, but there's no ending! Not a very satisfying read.

Waters is moving away from neo-Victorian fiction with this novel, but it's nevertheless brilliantly told. For fans of Waters an absolute must!

As usual with Waters, the setting is vividly rendered and the characters breathe. I didn't love this one as much as her others, but it will still probably make my top ten list for this year!

Once again, this excellent story teller has kept me her captive audience. Told backwards? Hmmm... It could be hard to pull off, but she does it deftly and it contributes to the feeling of this disjointed way that we as humans learn to know each other; it is a very interesting human story.

I was really amazed at how much research and detail went into this book. So impressed because of it, and how close you are to the real life of what was happening in London in the 1940s.

I was quite conflicted when reading it, in a strange way. Because it's written back to front I felt very sad about what was happening in some plot lines and excited in others, but she wrote it in such a way that it was still climactic at the end of the book.

Disappointing after her other books. She is a great stoyteller who writes real page turners, but here the story is told backwards (rather detracts from the suspense) & there isn't actually that much story.

Minutely researched wartime saga, and tremendously sad. Told in reverse, the paths of the characters' shell-shocked lives are traced back like pieces of shrapnel to the original bomb blasts that sent them flying. Quite different from Fingersmith, but equally involving. Also, I appreciate Waters' sentiment that apathy, to think there is nothing you can do about it, is the worst attitude to have, in war and in peacetime.

Really brought home to me the experiences people had during World War II in ways I'd never thought of. I abondoned family members at Christmas in order to hide in a room and find out more about the elusive Kay. God damn it. one day I will review a book and give it a bad review...

I found this novel quite hard going in parts as it is much slower than her other novels.

The characters were excellent and it was brilliantly written, you certainly feel sorry for some of them!
It is a very dark novel but it says a lot about human emotions/actions

I would have prefered some happier news at the end/beginning for some of the characters but i guess you can't always have happy endings!

interesting story, interestingly written. Liked the period detail of how real life in wartime London carried on, but without the gung-ho "Dunkirk spirit" that often comes through in lesser books on WW2. this is more about the practicalities and the tiredness.

Really good book, easy read. not as many sex scenes as id anticipated tho lol :( Last section (1940) was a bit of a let down, no real story to it. Id say u need a good memory to follow the story back in time because i forgot who was with who when and where. Waters is a good writer thought, wud defo read more of her books.

When you're reading their current state in 1947, you're still somewhat detached.. you don't care enough. By the time you end up reading all about how they got there, you want to go back to the beginning and read those same lines feeling somewhat heartbroken, somewhat ecstatic and completely engrossed in the lives of the characters. A very truthful depiction, of how life never remains the way it is at the moment.. or how you perceive it to be.

I like the connection in this novel with the lesbian classic "The Well of Loneliness," by Radclyffe Hall. There is something quintessentially lesbian about a war ambulance driver, rather like women softball players now, and I think Waters picked up on that a bit. I was a bit downtrodden by the whole, but I do think I see a great deal of progression in her work here, as if Waters has finally started to stride into her own outside of the satirical norm of her work.

Slow start to this book. It wasn't until the second part that I started to really get into it.

The author's recounting of the life of the four main characters from the latest point to the earliest is an interesting perspective. I also like that she did not answer all of the readers questions about the characters' respective pasts. All around, I would give it 3 stars.

Miten tämä Yövartio-kirja olikin niin huono ja tylsä kun vertaa saman kirjailijan Silmänkääntäjä-kirjaan?

It was quite a struggle to finish this one! As a matter of fact I'm surprised I did. After about 100 pages I already wanted to give up. I persisted mainly because of the great London WW II setting and the sympathy for certain characters. However, the going backwards in time annoyed me very much!

Not quite as good as "Tipping the Velvet" and "Fingersmith"!
