A must read for anyone interested in humanities future. (with Steyn's truly remarkable insights and humour.) Human Rights Tribunals and Islamic Fundamentalists trying to silence facts bring nothing but shame to themselves and their 'causes?' while bringing only dignity and strength to the wests democracy, church/state secularism and freedom of speech and thought. Thank you Mark Steyn for your courage and example.

Militant Islam is the greatest enemy the West has seen since the fall of the Soviet Union, and is poised to destroy Europe as we know it. Many "Western" values, like political correctness and multiculturalism, have turned round to bite their maker. Steyn's forcast may be gloomy, but his writing is just hilarious. He is the funniest non-fiction writer today, and also one of the sharpest and most accurate social critics. An absolute must read for anyone who is interested in seeing women's rights, religious rights, and liberty survive into the 21st century.

I am amazed by Mark Steyn's courage to tell the truth on the major problem in our Western society. What is happening in Canada and the rest of the world is that we are being hijacked by liberals to pave more comforts for minorities, especially the immigrants from Islamic background. Rather than asking those newcomers to adopt much of our value, those idiotic liberal politicians force us the citizens of the Free World to adopt Sharia law. Inasmuch to Steyn's concerns, I am disgusted with those Muslims' hostility to our Western values, and why they'd be in Western countries in the first place? If we are not careful, our Western world would return in the Dark Age. Moreover, "American Alone" is a easy to read book any fluent English reader would find it very humorous. (i.e. Kim has No Dong) Well done, Mark Steyn! It's a courage for Mark Steyn to speak out on the major problem of our Western society, whereas we submitted too much for social welfare and so-called multiculturalism. Moreover, the paperback edition has shown the major problem in freedom of speech in Canada, whereas our Government and so-called human right commissions are tolerant for Muslims to speak against advance Western civilization while intolerant towards our disgust for sharia, isn't our society become more irrational and ironic? Mark Steyn tells the truth of the biggest threat in Western society is the homegrown Islamic fundamentalists.

Have the courage to read this book: At least to preserve what minor remnants we have of free speech in this country. This text has its limitations: exaggerations, repetitive sections, logical leaps at times, etc. That being said, the arguments are generally well founded and set forth without any hesitation or fears as to public reaction. A breath of fresh air in stale times.

An excellent book that will open your eyes. And if you don't believe what this book warns about then you should visit Rotterdam, Strasbourg or Paris. And do it alone like I have. Then we'll see who's exaggerating, after you stop shaking. The scary thing is that Mr. Steyn shows how if your only choice in secular Western Europe is between the oppressive Nothingness of liberalism and the lunacy of radical Islam, it might actually be tempting to join the Islamists, especially if you are a young person just finding their way in the world. Luckily in America, the third choice—the Judeo-Christian tradition is still the number one option, and that will allow us to hold out the longest against this onslaught. I wish no harm against Europe. No matter how many insults you club Americans with, I still wish you wake up in time to save the other bookend of Western Culture.

After the Canadian general-interest magazine Maclean's reprinted a chapter from the book, five Muslim law-school students, acting through the auspices of the Canadian Islamic Congress, demanded that the magazine be punished for spreading “hatred and contempt" for Muslims. The plaintiffs allege that Maclean's advocated, among other things, the notion that Islamic culture is incompatible with Canada's liberalized, Western civilization. They insist such a notion is untrue and, in effect, want opinions like that banned from publication. Two separate panels, the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal and the Canadian Human Rights Commission, have agreed to hear the case. New York Post. Dec 16th 2007. This very fact seems to prove Mark Steyn's point. Unfortunately Canada always wants to be everyones' friend and in doing so they lend more credibility to pressure groups such as the Canadian Islamic Congress. All in all it's a good read with some very pertinent points.

Mark Steyn is hilariously offensive. He openly admits his assessments are alarmist but he makes quite the case that demographics are at the root of it all and right now much of the West, due to its citizens narcissistic ego centrism. is committing demographic suicide. Steyn intelligently notes, "Stick a pin almost anywhere in the world, near or far: the 'who' is the best indicator of the what-where-when-why." And the primary "who" that's multiplying ain't exactly so enlightened...

I picked up this book and thought Steyn had some great points: changing demographics with low economic mobility makes major problems, and the right to self defense and to offend are crucial for functioning democracy. But, I'm giving this book only one star because the entire book is a collection of fallacies. Many fallacy definitions can be found here:http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/I doubt Steyn left a single one out. His logic is so full of holes it's laughable. The majority of his arguments are pure speculation and tenuous at best. Many of his assumptions absurd, many of facts are misrepresented, and most subjects that he brings up as fact have no citation. I heard George W. Bush read this book, liked it, and recommended it to the public. I recommend this piece of nonsense to anyone that would like to have a concrete example of repeated flawed logic and argument, or understand the ignorant, irrational, paranoid, and bigoted mindset of the Bush Administration.

An amazing book that demonstrates the dangers of Islamofascism and the spread of this throughout the world, Steyn brilliantly brings to attention the dangers of incorporating these aspects into our Western civilization and also presents the dangers of this as seen in other countries such as France by displaying how it is incompatible to our western values and everything we hold dear. a wake up call that is well needed!

Mark Steyn is a much better author than he is a radio host, for no other reason than because he laughs too much on the radio but manages to avoid writing "har har heh hee" at the end of every sentence of his books. If all the stats Steyn gives are to be believed, the world faces a much more immediate crisis from radical Islam than it does from global warming. This is one of those books that may do nothing more than make you frustrated and depressed because of your own powerlessness, but then again, it may move you to some sort of productive action, and believe you me, "productive action" is just what this country needs. You'll know what I'm talking about once you read the book.

Welcome to the new Dark Ages! We're now witnessing the beginning of a population event greater than the Black Death of the 1300s. Mark Steyn, in America Alone, explains the demographic death spiral we find Japan, Russia, and Europe, while spelling out the geo-political consequences. The progressive welfare-state destroys itself by a fundamental contradiction. One, it believes in population reduction, championing abortion, feminism, gay marriage, and deferred adulthood. Secondly, it believes in lavish government programs which, to remain solvent, require an expanding population of taxpayers. A progressive society must outsource its baby production to survive. Islam, by colonizing Europe, will be the main beneficiary of the population implosion. Open-minded multiculturalism gives us the license and self-gratification of the West, along with the careless brutality and self-imposed ignorance of other societies. Liberals, who reduce culture to economics, can't conceive tatooed men in hoodies chanting Allahu Akbar while raping women and burning cars. Self-deceived Westerners believe they have no enemies, only new friends with grievances we haven't accommodated yet. Others ignorantly call for top-down assimilation, ignoring how imported radicals quickly adopt Western legalisms, victimology, and entitlements. The welfare-state, which feels guilty about everything it is and does, commands no allegiance-- one cannot assimilate to a nullity. The solution is to dismantle the welfare-state and put responsibility in the pockets of regular people. Virtue always atrophies when governments attempt to dispense social justice.

the demographic is always changing and some stats could prove to be false,regardless, it was exquisitely informative and gave me incite of the things happening around us.who would have guessed 5, 10, 15, years ago that mohamed would be the 3rd or 4th most popular name in maternity wards in britian ? there are big changes happening now. the author goes so far as to call europe, EURABIA...and praises the food the truthful ways,the pleasant people that are multiplying faster having 3 and 4 children as opposed to the average n.american or european that is only having 1.2-1.6 chidren on average. accepting this and rejecting sharia law and "BACKPACK" politics.it tells how the feminization of eurabia and n.american is causing men to not have kids.some may be true but it really is SPECULATIVE and we must keep our gaurd and hope it does'nt change too fast or we'll all be wearing beards and hijabs in no time.the iraq war is useless because the war is here ...in the maternity wards...and were losing...our tolerance is great but how tolerant are they ?

Steyn has written a decent book. His criticism of Islamofascism and the West's incessant accommodation of Islamists' intolerance, its toxic nature, and its growing influence (all which are contrary to the sensibilities and traditions of Western Civilization) is excellent. The West must wake up to this and discard its "multiculturalism at all costs" dogma before the West is lost forever.I know this will likely startle some people (especially here in Canada, where we "boast" of our "cultural mosaic"), but some cultures' traditions should not to be imported into Western societies as they do not belong here, especially wife-beating, honour killing, forced rape, female genital mutilation, and the stoning women who have been "convicted" of "adultery" (when, in fact, they were raped). Islamism is the most misogynistic, degenerative, and vile presence on this planet.However, his inclusion of criticisms of environmentalism and the concern about global warming shows poor judgment, as it is irrelevant to his thesis. Had he not included this (factually inaccurate) criticism of environmentalism and concern about global warming, this book would have been more impressive. If his criticism of environmentalism and inflexible conservatism had been excluded from this book, I would have given it five stars instead of three.

Mark Steyn writes really well, with clarity and simplicity and with humour. "Demography is destiny" has become a bit of a catch phrase for him, and this is his book length explanation of what he means by that phrase and why he believes it needs to be understood and addressed by Western culture. It's hard to fault his premise: If a large majority of the populace of a democratic society control the centers of power (political, media, legal, etc.) they'll shape the society to fit their desires. The expressed desires of Islamic leaders are largely incompatible with the desires of people in the West, so this is going to create some problems if it continues to occur.

This is an excellent resource for those of us who aren't afraid to learn the truth. If you're a "politically correct" type, forget this book; you'll hate it and be sorely tempted to be dishonest in your characterization of it. On the other hand, if you're into honesty and truth, and are willing to accept truths which are uncomfortable or even scary, then this is an excellent resource. It expains the upcoming voluntary european cultural suicide, as well as the oncoming islamofascist demographic bomb in layman's terms. This is an important, enlightening book for all thinking Americans.

This is one of the best reads I have had in a good long while. Finally, someone has the courage to come out and say what needs to be said about our navel-gazing, moral relativist western civilization. Furthermore, it is a nice, firm spanking to all the PC idealists and worshippers of multiculturalism-at-any-cost crowd who seem rabidly eager to social engineer our societies into oblivion. His anecdote about the real reason people slap "Free Tibet" stickers on their vehicles alone is well worth the price of the book!

America Alone is probably one of the best books I have read in a long, long time. Essentially, it paints a rather bleak future for America and the West in the face of increasingly militant Islamic extremism, using our own laws and culture against us. While Stein can be very funny, it is truly Schadenfreude as the case that he set out is factually based. It is a must read for anyone looking at East-West issues and the problems of the Middle East.

Goes over familiar numbers and ideas associated with the argument that Westerners are dying out and being replaced by immigrants (specifically Muslims in Europe who are hostile to Western culture), but presents the subject matter--somehow--with a great deal of humor and wit. A good introduction to the "Demographic Death of the West" discussion
