Amy Tan is very good at describing. I feel like I'm talking with my own grandmom. Her narrative style makes it real

What an excellent doorway into another world - one simultaneously familiar and strange. Impeccable writing and a wonderful story.

I read a lot of Amy Tan's books when I was younger. So many that I forgot which ones I've read. Why? Because I realized that all of her works are really one dimensional. There's an Asian girl (most likely Chinese), who is in love with an American man, and her Asian mother disapproves. The relationship between mother and daughter is strained until something happens where they all accept their differences. There's mother-daughter bickers and some sort of great sex between the two lovers. I've concluded that's the premises of all her books.

a world where sweaters are knit in memory of spider's webs, where birds can sound like women crying....
a brilliant disparate world made into magic through the sheer power of sadness.

The clash between a Chinese family's traditional roots and a Chinese-American daughter's wish to be seen as wholly American that began in THE JOY LUCK CLUB continues in THE KITCHEN GOD'S WIFE. Amy Tan again explores mother/daughter and Chinese/American themes that were deeply personal to her at the time and made this a thinly-veiled autobiography. Not as well received as THE JOY LUCK CLUB but every bit as well written.
