A good introduction to his work, both his science fiction (The Culture visits 1977 Earth) and his other fiction, some of it frankly experimental (cut-ups, anyone?).

Another glimpse into the Culture experience. Great writing. Some excellent shorts! Not all, but enough to lift the whole collection.

This book is a collection of short stories. Iain M Banks can't go wrong in my opinion.

The title story is hilarious, other stories darkly funny. Banks really delivered in this one.

This book has some great little short stories. I'm assuming the stories are part of his earlier writing (?) because they don't have the same feel as his more recent novels - but maybe I'm wrong. A couple of the shorter stories are just plain strange - and I loved them for that. The novella 'State of the Art' takes a look at early 'Culture' history... nice!

Great short stories from Banks! Several involve the "Culture", but a few stand on their own. This guy can WRITE.

When I grow up, I want to be a Special Circumstances agent. The Culture cycle is probably the best SF series I have ever read. Foundation was nice when I was younger: the older you get, the more you get to like characters like Linter.

This is a great little collection of short stories plus one somewhat longer one. The longer one, 'The State of the Art', concerns Banks' fictional futuristic world, 'The Culture', and their first contact with Earth. That novella alone, makes the collection worth reading, but I also enjoyed the stories which preceded it. Sadly, the final short story is a bit of a mess. Not sure what he was thinking including that one. Possibly a little highbrow for me and I just didn't 'get it', but it was a shame the collection finished on a slightly bum note.
