Good read overall, very nice in the way of old-fashioned creepiness- I got this on an audiobook (unabridged) and I really liked the way it was written, with the language- good story, too, but it still wasn't one of my favorite books- I think it could have been a little more.... I don't want to say dramatic, but parts of it seemed to drag a little... although that did make the style of the book awesome. Really cool descriptions of the island, and all that though. Worth reading.

Great book. Not very shocking, considering how far science has advanced these days. But parts of the novel are truly horrific. Particularly the parts that defy description, as when Prendrick lives with the Beast People for 10 months. He alludes to this period with few words, merely stating that the horror and grotesque condition can not be contained by words, and that he survived, which is all that matters. Way ahead of its time when it was written in the 1890s.

I enjoyed this book. A good adventure yarn with a healthy dose of sci-fi horror thrown into the mix.
The science is hugely questionable but correct in it's day (though modern discoveries have left it rather defunct) and raises many ethical issues.

Really worth a look. Don't write it off just if you saw and failed to enjoy one of the appalling cinematic offerings.

Incredibly disturbing, and in some ways very moving for those of us who come to sympathize with the Beast People. The novel can be read in so many ways--colonial allegory, Biblical allegory, social commentary. It's a very fruitful text for anyone who likes to examine different layers of meaning. I enjoyed this much more than Wells' The Time Machine.

I first read this book when the movie adaptation came out. It freaked out like no other novel did. Rereading it, I still find it a frightening vision. What I particularly enjoyed about this reread is how Wells' is using his story as a parable on human nature, science, and religion.

Bad science, but who can't love a mad scientist playing God on an obscure island? Atmosphere great, though there's not really a plot. I wonder how I missed the old movie version: "Island of the Lost Souls"? 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Creepy and weird. I sold it after I read it. I have decided that I really don't like H.G. Wells that much, or Jules Verne, either. It's like science fiction without much reliable science to make the story more convincing.

A fiction classic that I've hear about for years and unfortunately waited this long to read it.

A word of warning, however, the language in the book is from the late 19th century and several words have fallen out of common usage and may require a dictionary to ascertain the meaning.

Hooked me right in with this structure of a story within a story, and the style of a scientific account kept me intrigued throughout. It did a lot of interesting exploring into the human psyche and condition. Plus, it was violent and animalistic. Full review: http://www.amazon.com/review/R12081CFVMJS59/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm

An enjoyable, readable, if not gripping novel with a nice basic structure but a rather too matter of fact delivery. What made this book valuable to me was Moreau. Against the somewhat drab background of the narrator's chronicaling, the passionate, active, yet deeply vulnerable personality of Moreau stands out briefly but brightly.

It's hard to see, as the introduction explained, the first generation of readers thinking the book was meant only to be disturbing, thus missing the allegory. Wells splays humans self-righteous attitudes alive with Moreau's vivisected monsters, reformed in their maker's image (love the analogy: Beast Folk:The Law/Ones With the Whip::Humans:Religion/God). I especially appreciated Prendick's difficulty, like a demilitarized soldier, reintegrating himself with society upon his escape and rescue from the Doctor's sickening satire of the human condition. Seeing actual men and women as travesties of humanity aswell and fearing the same is true of himself, Prendick spends his life in solitude, reading books, star-gazing, and hoping the idealized man does exist and we are more than beasts, if only distinguished by our hope in itself. "These are not men that have us. They are animals."
