An entertaing and thought provoking novel about the hardships of life for a riverman in 1800's London and the equally hard life when transpoted to Australia as a convict. Fascinating details from thorough research really brings story alive. The ignorance of the whites about the ways of the Aboringinies and therefore their persecution makes one feel ashamed on their behalf, how would we treat them if Australia only discovered today? Would highly recommend this book.

having just been to sydney for the first time this year, i wish i had read this book earlier so that i could have done a lil more exploring! a beautifully written aussie tale from the streets of london town to the colony life in nsw, often depicting the true and gruesome life of thornhill as a poor man, rich man - but not without great sacrifice. shows a facet of dark australian history - which often gets placed on the backburner

Although the writing was skillful, and I typically love historical fiction, I didn't finish this book - it was just too incredibly painful. I know this says more about me than the book, my willingness to bury my head in the sand when things in the news or even in books I'm reading are too painful, sad or horrific...
