Another great story. Takes place in the cold climate of Colorado. Poor Italian family and the struggles of life. You get to know the chauvinism of Mr. Bandini and how he realizes to finally come home to Maria.

another american writer with an incredible cadence and sense of place. if you're up for it, have someone with a great voice read this aloud to you. excellent foreplay.

Como narrador (novelista), John Fante es mucho mejor que Bukowski, aunque todos sabemos que fue gracias a este que se pudo descubrir su obra. Este es el único libro que he podido conseguir de la saga y aventuras de Arturo Bandini.

Didn't get into it really. Too much sense of having read/seen that before (the role of religion, the violent man/the suffering mother....)But thw writing, intense and dynamic, makes me curious about the rest of the novels, where the main character (guessing) will be free from their parents, so I'll probably give it another try.

another fante classic; i'd say this is better than "the road to los angeles" and almost (but not quite) as good as "ask the dust" - the story is something else, the way fante divulges from Svevo's character to the Bandini children is effortless, and the refrain in the middle few chapters is heart pounding stuff:"What happened in the vacant house on Windsor Street? Did he lead the widow to a vacant room and violate her? Did he kiss her? Then go to that house, Maria. Speak to the cold rooms. Scoop the cobwebs from the corners and ask them questions; ask the naked floors, ask the frosted window panes; ask them if Svevo Bandini had done wrong" strongly recommended, a great introduction to fante in my opinion

Standard stuff: coming of age story, poverty, catholic guilt. Stick with Ask the Dust.

I absolutely loved this book. Fante is an amazing writer, I don't know why he isn't more popular. Highly recommend.

Surprisingly soul searching for Fante. A great read. Story driven...the characters are real and tragic. Fante once again re-creates his classic character Arturo Bandini this time as a child. Don't look for any continuity in the Bandini saga...you'll just get confused.

Fante really knows how to tell a family story. It wasn't really that remarkable of a situation but I was spell-bound by his description.
