I read this because I was lucky enough to meet Dan Abnett (along with Sandy Mitchell and John Lambshead) when they came to a book signing at the shop where I work. I'd never read anything else by the Black Library (or to be honest been interested in doing so) but I really was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this! Despite the central characters being genetically enhanced humans they seemed totally real even when in the midst of battles against megarachnids. I must admit it did take me a while to get into the book (though that may have been simply because the entire Warhammer universe is new to me) but I'm very glad I kept reading. I would definitely recommend this to anyone already a fan of the genre and as a good place to start for any other newbies like me!

Abnett sets the standard for the Horus Heresy series, and perhaps sets it too good!! This is amazing, Horus is portrayed brilliantly and thus makes his eventual fall from grace all the more tragic.

Garviel Loken is one of the best characters from any book or movie I have known.

I have been a fan of 40K for nearly two decades, and never really thought there was anything special about the Astartes. After reading this, I immediately set about collecting a Space Marine army. Abnett takes the Astartes to a whole new level, the brotherhood between the warriors will appeal to any man...

Thanks Dan!!

Book 1 of the Horus Heresy. A brilliant start to the tale of how the Warmaster Horus rebelled against the Emperor of Mankind.

Really not bad. Very slow start up, but there's no rush.

Awe inspiring, jaw dropping, non-stop action from page 1. I loved this book and got me into reading 40K fiction. Damn you Dan Abnett for being so cursed talented. I so wish I had your talent for writing.

Wow! Dan Adnett does it again. I love the first book of the series. It makes the Imperial Space Marine more developed and in depth. The story is so full of life you wish that you had met Hastur Sejanus. I will not say more for fear of spoiling het story. Even the Warmaster was a likable character, even though you know what he will do later.
