As a Dark Angels collector, I was initially disappointed with this especially given how amazing the previous four Heresy books were. On my second read I found a better appreciation for this book, and now with Fallen Angels released it will seem more relevant.

Glad to see that the sequel (Fallen Angels) is coming. The first book is interesting but definitely lacks a conclusion, leaving us hanging in the middle of the story. Looking forward to see where things are going as the story unfolds.

Ah...The ever secretive Dark Angels. This book managed to shed some light on them. I loved the contrast between the two main characters. Lion El'Johnson was not what i expected. He seemed very manipluative and paranid.

This was a good book on it's own, but this book has little, if ANY reference to the Horus Heresy.It literally only mentions Horus's name twice if i remember. This is a chapter Origin story.

A book about the origin of the Dark Angels. Over half the book takes place on pre-Imperium Caliban in a quasi-fantasy setting.Not bad, not great. Part of the Horus Heresy series and pretty standard 40K fare, somewhat naively written.

I thought this was a very good Horus Heresy book. It isn't stereotypical Heresy stuff at all, as over half the book doesn't even have Space Marines in it. Instead it deals with Caliban's medeival culture and first contact with the Imperium. In my opinion this would make a really good introductory book for someone unfamiliar with the 40K universe. Even when Zahariel, the main character, is deployed on his first expedition he faces the most frightening foe of all: Bureaucracy! Of course such evil can only be the work of Chaos and unfortunately in what I consider to be the book's weakest part the warp creature is defeated by a plot-device-bomb in hollywood fashion. Fortunately, this isn't that big a deal because it appears this is only the first part of a Dark Angels Trilogy!
