I thought this one plodded more than the others,until the second half. The relationship between Gelis (and Gelis as a character) just seemed weakly written.

In my opinion, the best of the Niccolo series -- but, as with PiF and Lymond, it has to be read in order for the greatest impact.

marian keyes' style of writing is pretty much unique. this book is just great. every story in this book is worth buying it.

got this as a freebie and took it on holiday with me. what an entertaining read. couldn't wait to read a full novel when I got back.

The best in the series in my opinion, this book takes Niccolo to Timbuktu in the mid-15th century. He finds a scholarly community, a wealth of Islamic knowlege and a civilization that puts some of the European locales he has passed through look barbaric.
