Not an easy read, mainly due to the narrator's constant breaking of the "fourth wall" which was all the rage at the time. Amongst a great deal of addressing the reader directly, Fielding does interweave a compelling tale of Tom Jones, a flawed by heroic figure as he quests for the hand of his true love, Sophia. The best portions of the novel are when fielding takes a backhanded swipe at any number of the pillars of society of England of his time. Usually this is in the form of literal adoration for said institution or persons, until one reads the passage carefully. One wonders how many of his contemporaries actually got it, and how many thought Fielding was complimenting and praising them. In any event, widely regarded as the first true English novel, this is worth the long read.

Surprisingly hilarious. Not at all what I expected. Fantastastic read, lively characters, comedic situations (can be tricky to keep track of sometimes)... all around great read.

Finished at last. An interesting read, although I would query whether it is really the funniest book every written. I quite liked the intro sections to each part, and the way Fielding helps you to remember what has gone on previously. As one of the first ever novels, he was offering his readers a helping hand to get the most from it. It is a fun story despite always knowing how its going to end, there are lots of twists and turns along the way. Also shows how little society has moved on in over 200 years: who you are seems more important than how you act, except, of course, to Tom.

A touch too philosophical for my taste. The author puts himself in the book too much... at some point I screamed "JUST TELL THE STORY!" Then he apologizes about how he's delaying in telling the story. When you repeatedly do something after saying sorry... you're not sorry!
The story, if and when you found it, was humorous and engaging.

A bit long, but funny and the characters are multidimensional, not just stereotypes.

Very good. An adventure story you wouldn't expect in the beginning.

The most difficult book I have ever read. I made the mistake of reading an "original" printing version complete with all the strange spellings of words. the story it self is ever so funny, fun and lively.

This book is great, but very, very long. What I recommend: see the movie - the 1997 A&E production. The movie is also long, but it's sort of a "best of." Also, it's narrated by John Sessions (the commedian, who you may have seen on the British version of Whose Line Is It Anyway). If you like dry British humor, this movie is hysterical.
